Just noticed that there are no notifications of any sort displayed.
Also not that only one of my two trips scheduled for this month is displaying on the home screen. Maybe as the next trip outbound date gets closer, things will change.

under “flight details” there’s a section for aircraft type, but it doesn’t actually contain any info

I feel like the product manages and designers behind the app either dont fly or only nonrev and thus dont have the experience of having normal paid and confirmed reservations. I wish theyd do some real research with actual users of the app because it sure seems like theyre not doing that!

No app is perfect, but I have no material complaints with the AA App.

A couple of big things come to mind:
if you have a trip where you are going to a connecting city when the trips are displayed, it shows that youre going to the connecting city instead of your final destination, I think that a bunch of people have commented about this being a bit of a interesting design choice over the years.
Theres a bunch of features that instead of natively utilizing the app require you to go through the web browser onto the American Airlines website, which is just sort of a bizarre experience.
This isnt specific to the app as it also applies to the website, but they both do a very poor job interacting with other carriers. You cant select seats on other carriers without going to the separate websites. I dont necessarily expect them to get it up and running for every other carrier, but focusing on carriers like British Airways and Iberia would make sense. There should be continuity between these airline experiences within the app.
I think it would be nice if the app could also display the group number that is currently boarding.
It would be good if you could see the aircraft tail number and the inbound flights for more than the direct inbound flight.
This is another one thats not specific to the app and also applies to the website but the app and website do a very poor job allowing you to modify a trip that has any complexity to it in any regard. Its difficult to modify a round trip when you have already flown the outbound. Its difficult to make any modifications to a trip that has a system wide upgrade attached to it. This is actually a bad experience for both the airline and for us because it requires expensive manual intervention sometimes from both a tariff desk and from a regular support desk and Ive had a number of telephone calls that Ive exceeded an hour to make some basic changes.
As someone who regularly flies on around the world tickets, the app and website dont allow any sort of changes to these tickets. Actually one interesting thing is I had a flight cancellation associated with and around the world ticket and the auto reaccommodation tool was not able to help me. I needed to call in.
I honestly think that the graphical user interface and design decisions are just a little bit strange. Instead of being able to show multiple flights on a single screen within the app you have to swipe between flights. I just think thats kind of an unusual and strange design decision.
I think that theres probably a lot more but these are the ones that came to mind right away.

this is a fair question and I took a little bit to think about it because I’m having a hard time thinking of all of my feedback all at once.

How about we get you hired at AA to be on their App Design Team!

Very good points you have made. Thank you for taking the time to write a well-written piece to explain your view. It's refreshing when someone can do this. While I still do enjoy the app, there is no denying the points you brought up are valid and I would also like to see some/all of the changes you suggested.

Given that I'm currently a funemployed technical product maager, I'd love that opportunity... Particularly for the nonrev benefits! I've applied for some jobs at airlines but given that I don't have real aviation experience (on my resume) it's hard to get an interview!

They don't really have any product management jobs posted that I've seen (and I've looked)...the most direct experience I have would be working on the website/app and/or doing something in revenue management
