AA award trip booking change
I booked a business class round trip from DFW to Milan (MXP) through AA AAdvantage on Finnair. Finnair has canceled one of the flights on my return leg. I reached out to AA to rebook and they informed me that they could only rebook based upon available award inventory. This will cause my return trip to delay by one and result in a hotel stay in Helsinki. Do I have any recourse to push AA to rebook out of all available inventory?

AA can open up additional award inventory for you on AA metal. They will typically do that when the disruption is caused by an AA flight. Whether they will do so when the disruption is caused by a partner flight, I do not know.
How soon is the original AY flight that was cancelled, and how far in advance of departure date were you notified of the cancellation? Depending on the answer to those questions, you might have certain rights under EC 261/2004.

As noted in earlier responses, AA can only request its partners to open up additional award space, though it can do so on its own flights. Would you be able to return to Texas from Milan via London or Spain (e.g., Madrid or Barcelona)? If so, AA might be able to arrange a suitable substitute for the cancelled flight, especially if the transatlantic portion is on AA itself.

Thank you for all the responses. I've asked the AA awards agent if they could rebook me via MXP-JFK-DFW on AA. The agent has kicked this to a different department to see if they can open inventory to support this change. I should have update in 72 hours.

Very likely AA follows through with that, so you should be good.
You likely won’t hear back from AA directly, just watch your inbox for the e-ticket confirmation email with the change or check your trip online.
And if you see no change in 72h call them back. If a change in taxes triggers a small additional collection, the reticketing usually gets stuck.
