Notably absent from the list of stand down and crowdstrike airlines is Alaska and Jetblue. Different operating systems?

Different malware/virus detection system.

Nothing like a double-digit percentage gap down to open things...

what the hell is crowdstrike

AA now has a travel waiver available for basically any flight touching a hub today, which may be helpful.

It's like crowdfunding only more destructive.

What gets me is how this app/service is apparently modifying system files that prevent systems from booting. Seems very...strange to me, and the solution is even stranger.

This IT outage was a blessing in disguise for my sister, who arrived at CLT at 6am with her 2 small children to fly non-rev (husband is an AA pilot)--because of cancelled flights they were able to clear into FC to Houston! It was her first time flying FC and she and my little 4 & 6 yo nephews were so grateful and happy. :)

Antivirus / threat protection systems all work at a pretty deep OS integrated level. Much closer to the kernel than a typical application running in user memory space. Doesn't surprise me at all they could break an OS with an update.

Good luck to everyone affected!

Email from my organisation's IT department this morning was like this:
All science & research divisions: Read these instructions.
All other divisions: Try to read these instructions. We can help too but it may take a while.

Lol. That's hilarious ...

And all of us who use Unix-based OS's are sitting here continuing to work in peace while the world comes crashing to a screeching halt around us!

It's been a long night for me (I'm in the IT sector), got the first notification near midnight my time, I've been up since assisting my clients where I can. Glad I'm not flying today, I hope everyone is able to get where they need to go within a reasonable time. Thankfully most of the systems I deal with use Linux/Unix, but the ones that use Crowdstrike on Windows, well, it's not been a fun night.

Tell me that you don't use Windows without saying that you don't use Windows.
