Cancelling Award Ticket

If I cancel an award ticket, is there any penalty or will miles be redeposited into the account? What about fuel surcharge?

I just booked and canceled two awards. No penalties and got both my miles and money back no problem. Including BA surcharges

very frequently AA will forget to refund the taxes and fees making for a long confusing call. It will sit as a trip credit much of the time. I called to get 8 taxes and fees refunded for several family trips. They also said oops we see we owe you 90k miles for another cancellation we didn’t credit last year. I never would have noticed as I buy and cancel tix often. Must pay closer attention!
