Fare repricing on I fare ticket?

Fare repricing on I fare ticket?

Hi
Hoping for advice from AA experts here as it's the first time I've had to make a change to an AA tix.

I jumped on a discounted I fare business class tix (MAD-SEA, YVR-FCO - on BA metal via LHR, but AA codeshare) earlier this year. I flew the MAD-SEA segment July 2023 and had booked the YVR-FCO flight for January 2024 but now need to change the YVR-FCO segment to July 2024.

When I called AA for the change today, the first agent told me there were no "I" fares available in July for my family of 5 and after speaking to ticketing, told me that booking me on the next fare class for my requested date in July would cost me more than $3K for the fare difference per person. He also told me that as long as I could find "I" fare availability (eg. if I was willing to split my family up on different travel dates), the only price difference I would pay would be ancillary fees like airport taxes (e.g if I routed through a different airport).

I used Expertflyer and found a couple of other options in July that had "I" fare availability but when I called AA again, the second agent told me that I would have to pay an additional $2K+ per person even though those were in "I" class. She said that it is because the new date is in July which is peak summer season. I asked if the historical fare was used because that's in the fare rules, and she said yes.

Both agents were friendly and seemed helpful, but I'm not sure who is correct. It also doesn't give me much comfort when the agent tells me that these fare differences are being calculated manually by their ticketing colleagues as that makes me think there's more room for error and interpretation.

I understand that July tends to be a busy period for Europe but the fare difference seems quite significant here (I paid under 2K per person for the original ticket). Is it possible that changing dates can result in such a large fare increase even when there's "I" class availability on the new dates? If it makes any difference, my fare basis according to my ticket is INX9C1S4 and INN1C5S4.

Any advice on the above would be much appreciated!!

What date in July did you fly out and what date in July do you want to fly back?

If it is more than 1 year between outbound and inbound, then a large price increase is to be expected

Thanks for the feedback! It is within the 365 day period. I flew out end of July 2023 and was looking at dates before the 1-year mark, but there was still the huge price increase.

Is it possible that because I have two fare basis codes INX9C1S4 (for MAD-SEA) and INN1C5S4 (YVR-FCO), that is complicating the fare repricing process for the ticketing agents?

How much were the taxes and carrier surcharges and how much extra is the new cost. I think that AA and BA may have increased their carrier surcharges since the purchase date

Outside of that, I would ask for details of the difference

Some advice after having experienced something similar … (not ideal)

Do you come to North America often? If so, you could “roll” your flight credit forward. Here’s how …

Ask to cancel the reservation and receive a flight credit. Find a discounted biz fare from North America to Europe round trip, originating in North America and apply the flight credit there. The round trip fare might end up being slightly more expensive, but then you can schedule the return leg for further out in the future and roll the value of the credit again if you don’t want to take it. You also avoid change fees by doing this.

The reason you would want to do this is that it seems the agents are pricing you out a new one-way fare, rather than the discounted round-trip fare which is often less or close to the same price on TATL itineraries.

They shouldn't be, it should be using the historical pricing on the back half of the original return as long as it's within ticket validity.

My guess is the second agent isn't familiar with the after-departure conditions and is mistaken. I'd suggest OP tries again, and has them confirm with the fares department if they suggest a fare difference - hopefully they're corrected and the difference it minimal.

If OP is switching from a non-peak to peak time, the fare could definitely increase significantly, even using historical prices.

Agree that OP should try again and see. The fact that they have two disparate prices tells me that all is not kosher with the replies they got.

I’ve had things like this happen before where the fare basis I am trying to rebook, actually was filed with a “travel complete by” date, and that specific fair basis couldn't be used. But that doesn’t mean they need to jump immediately to only.fares that exist today, I believe they’re able to look at other historical fare bases that would have been ticketable on the date your ticket was issued. I was able to point to a family of fares that were available at the date of ticketing and take advantage of one that was slightly more expensive that did not have a “travel by” restriction.

question for all of you … on either the app or the website, how do you get a copy of the exact fare rules for the ticket after the journey has already begun (or even at all)?

True, some fares [and very common on the cheaper ones] are filed with valid periods so moving outside of that could cause the jump. It certainly shouldn't be repriced as a one-way as suggested above though. If OP shares the fare codes, route, flight and ticketing dates then we can look on ExpertFlyer to see if that's the issue.

You can't after purchase unless you can still recreate the journey and fares still exist and the rules have not changed. ITA Matrix fare search will also show fare rules and their formating is much easier to read than AA website formating. The only way to pull up historical fares that I'm aware of is with an ExpertFlyer subscription as they maintain fare filings going back a year and they let you backdate the ticketing date with a fare search to bring up the historical fares. EF does not include most taxes, fees, and carrier-imposed surcharges in fare pricing, so some historical pricing info is not available.

Both fares are actually still available for purchase. They have lengthy 120 day APs and the return fare has a 10 day min stay requirement (so you have to search out pretty far to bring them up and make sure your stay is at least 10 days). Outbound fare also has day of week travel restrictions (MON/TUE/WED/SUN) and a 200 EUR change fee. Carrier-imposed surcharges for ex-EU fares are currently 550 EUR each-way on biz fares.

Not currently seeing any availability in I with LHR routing on BA with AA coding on flights in July. Having availability in I with BA codings is not sufficient since these are AA fares and they must have availability with AA flight codings. You also need to be looking at bucket availability from Spain point-of-sale since bucket availability on same flights can vary based on point-of-sale.

Seeing some availability in I with DFW routing in July, but nothing with I5 or higher so DFW routing will not work. It's looks like there are quite few dates available with CLT routing in July that are I5 or higher. Google Flights/ITA doesn't show CLT routing options by default (probably due to long layover -- had to force CLT routing in ITA with advanced controls).

The fare rules for the INN1C5S4 are below.

There doesn't seem to be any restriction that would impact travelling in July - there are no seasonal issues

I think that there may be carrier surcharge changes between purchase date and now. What was the base fare paid and taxes/charges ?

Is there enough availability oin I class for all 5 people when searrching for YVR-FCO using only AA flight numbers? Dont just check sector by sector.

From what I can see on EF, there are 2 seats available on 29 July, 1 on 12th July and no availbility any other day in July

If you change your routing - e.g. YVR-ORD-LHR-FCO on 6/7/24, there is more availabilry

Given that OP has 5 pax, finding flights that are I5 or better with decent routing is going to be a challenge. As far as I can see on EF, the only routing with I5 or more availability on a fairly consistent basis in July is YVR-CLT-FCO (which unfortunately involves a nearly 12 hour connection). While the fare does not have seasonality restrictions, the fact that OP is looking during a high demand period means finding flights with 5 or more seats in I bucket is generally going to be problematic.

There will be very little change in taxes and surcharges, generally OW adjust total cost of EU-US and US-EU fares by varying the base fare with the surcharges more or less being the absolute floor.
This is why having some TA, even an OTA, is beneficial. I have found AA and BA to be horrible with understanding their own fare rules, especially things like this where the customer has some flexibility. They are used to working with fares that are not changeable at all and struggle to accurately apply the historical fares rule.

With enough work you can find a routing that works with the routing rules, the idea that there is no I space for 5 pax because it is high season is not accurate. I buy 5 pax in I class every year on similar routes, often not until February or March.

You can find I space, it’s just a matter of finding a competent AA agent to successfully price. You may need to work on seeing if they can reprice one pax initially to see if EF is not accurately reflecting inventory. You should also check this, I think you can change the O or D of you double open jaw and still access historical fares for other city combinations for your return, which may open more options.
