I don't check bags even for INTL trips, and I am speaking from experience on an airport change I have done many times, most even on separate tickets.

Like any close connection, the real question to ask is, how bad is it if you miss it? If there's a later flight the same day then it's probably not worth worrying too much about (unless you are in J/F and are worried that you will be reaccomodated in a lower class of service)
If it's a big problem if you miss it then push them to reschedule you. It's not uncommon to have your first flight be delayed by 20-30 min, and then not unheard of have to wait another 30-40 min for checked bags. |

One hour? Come on.
That's barely possible even by helicopter. the baggage cutoff is 60 minutes. By policy, AA can offload you on an intl flight if you're not there at T30. How exactly does one do this? |

If you have little luggage the best option in my opinion is to take the the free MTA bus to the Subway. It's non-stop from the airport. There is a direct express subway to to Jamaica Station from where you take the monorail to your terminal. It's quite safe IMHO, could take as little as 45 mins ( but 1 hour is more reasonable).
Safe travels! |
ok, I found my old notes in this thread:
https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/new-...jfk-lga-3.html Took a little over an hour door to door. |

which bus to which subway station and which line?
Caution: During the weekday evening rush hour, a few Jamaica-bound "E" trains do not go to Jamaica Center, but go to 179th Street/Hillside Avenue instead. The 179th Street-bound "E" trains do not serve the Sutphin/Archer/JFK station. You can download an "E" train schedule here: https://new.mta.info/schedules |
One caution on this: if you have a ton of luggage, this could be a pain. If you have one rollalong bag (either carry on or check) and a backpack or hand bag, this is very doable.

LGA TO JFK connection - enough time?
I need to travel last minute and with what options that were left, I will be flying DTW - LGA on AA arriving at 11.55am and connecting to ATH from JFK on AA at 5.30pm (midweek).
Im looking for some reassurance that 5 1/2 hours will be sufficient time to get from one airport to the other (assuming on time flights) as I am stressing out about it. I will have checked baggage and am planning on taking a cab from LGA arrivals to JFK departures. Thanks in advance! |

If both flights are on a single PNR, then AA is obligated to protect you in the event that IROPS causes you to misconnect at JFK. |

That should be more than enough time.

The flights are on a single ticket, and I have a hotel booking in ATH so really hoping that 5.5hrs is sufficient time for connection. Thanks for your reply!

They are 10 miles apart. That’s way more than enough time. Take the Q70 bus to Roosevelt Avenue, take the E train from there to the JFK subway stop and take the Airtrain the rest of the way. Or take a Lyft/Uber.

Thanks - Im feeling better now about it!

Be even more adventurous, and save money in the process. the above routing will only cost $2.75 |
