Perhaps that explains your position and thus you feel there is no need to have windows on commercial passenger aircraft.....

LoL wut?

Have you ever thought of flying FDX or UPS?

It’s actually very correct because I’ve kept at least one of my window shades open on every flight I’ve ever taken unless I personally decided to close it. I’ve declined every request to close all of my shades and blocked every attempt by the FA to dim my 787 windows.

If you’re flying business class, you’ll find a handy amenity provided by virtually every airline called an eye mask which you can use to block outside light.

So, rather than expect other customers who prefer a view outside to accommodate your demands, try putting on the eye mask and you’ll find that you have total control over how dark the cabin gets, all without inconveniencing other people.

If you want to control the window shade then secure a window seat. It's that simple.

Correct. I prefer the windows open (unless the sun is unbearable), but I also prefer an aisle seat. I would never think of asking the person by the window to open it for me. I am fortunate that a lot of my flights are on the smaller planes with 1-2 configuration and snag the 1 side whenever possible so I get the best of both worlds.

yeah I've been on an AA 787 ex-LHR where individual control of the electronic seat shade was overridden. As much as I like overhead call button usage I chose to choose my battles and did so wisely.

Window shades up at boarding for me, I'll lower them halfway if there's direct glare and put them down if I'm trying to sleep on a daytime flight (or if asked by an FA - only has happened once or twice in my memory), but otherwise they remain permanently up. I've deliberately sat in a window seat for each of the 68 segments I've taken since mid-2017 (including asking people to switch if I end up in not a window - they are usually happy to do it). I'll always try to pick a seat out of direct sunlight when I can though.

I find that looking out the window and listening to music is the best form of IFE for me, especially in Y - beats watching TV or a movie on a tiny seatback screen or on an ipad/phone.

If I need to work, the glare isn't a problem for me. I very much enjoy the matte screen on my laptop (Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen 9).

No one bought the fake explanation, by the looks on their faces, but also no one pressed it further 👍

This explanation isn't fake if you're sitting in seat 3A on N117AN. Ask me how I know :)

Upper-end devices are for upper-end travelers...really shouldn't be sitting in first/biz otherwise.

My own twist on how you used to have to pick your preferred AA first class row according to FEBO for first shot at meal choice.
To avoid the sun, try:

Port even, starboard odd in the morning
Starboard even, port odd in the afternoon

(Of course this assumes the good ol' days when northbound flights had even flight numbers and southbound ones odd flight numbers and further assumes that the N-S direction takes precedence over the E-W on numbering "diagonal" flights like DFW-PDX/SEA, MSY-DEN, MIA-MSP etc.!)

But, yes, I do sometimes take into account side of the airplane when picking a window seat on the many DFW flights that generally operate in SW<>NE or SE<>NW directions. Unless of course it's a 1-2 configuration in which case always the A side!

Fan of Dark Cabin or Dimly lit cabin

Have you ever tried sitting in a seat that has no control over the window and someone opens the window without any kind of thought for the fellow passenger in the row?

one might be napping or watching a show on a device.

worse is when the sunlight pokes straight into your eyes but the guy/gal at the window is shielded.

I vote for dark cabins or at least shade has to be below where the sun does not pierce through the eyes.

There really ought to be some happy medium in this. Perhaps with electronic dimming a certain amount of light reduction will be mandatory depending on the brightness at a given time, but not blocking the view entirely.

I've been in a seat when a beam of bright light, in an otherwise dim cabin, went straight into my eyes, the seat in control was unaffected, and no, I don't want to be blindfolded like I'm about to face a firing squad.

"I know [x] have probably wondered" means you don't know what at least one of those words means.

Nice. I wasn't so lucky during my HEL-JFK flight on AY. It was more due to clouds though as my row window was open and though I was in the aisle my seatmate (stranger from Finland) swapped seats with me for half hr when we got over Greenland. So there are still a few that like the views

what you're discussing is someone with no etiquette handling the window (more of a rare case). Most people pay heed to such basic courtesies. Don't try to spin this into something so only your needs should matter.

Update: I just thought of a really cool idea. I'm going to make these things called Eye cover and breathing combo masks. It will have two cloth pieces made of soft material that cover the eyes well and will have straps for those that want to nap as well as an extended piece over the nose and mouth for respiratory particle masking. I could add a Velcro and sell them as attachable items. So people can use one or both as needed. Custom logo labeling or art also available. What do you all think of this "eye mask", " invention".. since not FTers seem to be unaware of it on this thread and want windows closed instead. Maybe you should also try covering the sun up in the sky. Petition to NASA or SpaceX. Smh
