First Licensed African American Woman Pilot Honored by All-Black, Female Crew

CBS News:

Bessie Coleman, first African American woman to earn a pilot's license, honored by All-Black, female airline crew
An American Airlines flight recently made history when, for the first time in the carrier's 96-year existence, everyone involved from the ramp to the gate to the cockpit and cabin were all Black women.

The recent flight from Phoenix to Dallas celebrated the 100th anniversary of Bessie Coleman, the first African American woman to earn a pilot's license.

Coleman had to learn to fly in France because it wasn't an option in the U.S. She then became a renowned stunt pilot before losing her life in a plane crash in 1926.

Even though I know the facts and history, reading sentences like "Coleman had to learn to fly in France because it wasn't an option in the U.S." still boggle the mind. It wasn't that long ago...

Very nice gesture to honor a milestone.

In 1923 all women were barred from flight schools in the US.

Amazing and inspiring! Coincidentally, I had my first black female pilot on a flight last week.

Amelia Earhart learned to fly in 1920 - 1921 and bought her first airplane in 1922.

Amelia Earhart didn't attend a flight school, she had to take private lessons as did a number of black flyers in that era.

When a black founded flight school opened in Harlem in 1939, they barred Women from enrolling.

There are times when I truly hate the day and age in which we live. Not so today. I am absolutely delighted to see all these fine ladies and so glad that their excellence is recognised and that Bessie Coleman blazed a trail which has such consequences today.
