Got a call asking to “Downgrade” my flight?

I’m currently r route to DFW to connect with AA240 to FCO in. “C”.

Just before door close in LAX, AA called me asking me to “Downgrade” from “C” to economy? They offered $500 or 20,000 miles.

at the time I booked “C” economy was only $250 and I paid $3,600 for “C”.

why would they offer so little when the difference is $3,350?

Is anyone else getting the “Downgrade” call?

Yes I get these calls. Many times they're to flyers that have upgraded or paid very little. You paid $3.6K for LAX/DFW for domestic F? Unless it was OPP I'd think most FFs, me included, wouldn't dare bite.

I would absolutely pay $3,600 to fly LAX-FCO in J, and I also wouldn't have taken that deal.

Was this for just the domestic portion. No way I'd go for that if it was all the way to FCO.

Generally, downgrade compensation DOES NOT include fare difference.

One has to question the sanity/intelligence of those who decide to pose the question given what OP paid for the ticket. The only reasonably expected reaction would be a huge laugh.

I’d guess then generally these offers are NOT accepted then. Who in their right mind would pay 3K, then accept a $250 ticket in exchange for only $500. anyone for whom that math sounds reasonable is very unlikely to have 3K to spend in the first place.

Exactly but AA's Revenue Mismanagement team seems to think otherwise... then they wonder why their yields keep falling when they have no respect for customers who are actually paying J fares

Maybe, just maybe if a company paid the $3600 but the miles or $ go to the pax then it might happen but for me it'd be a hard no.

I've used this exact scenario to my advantage in the past.

I think what @garykung is saying is that downgrade compensation is above and beyond what an airline is legally obligated to offer in a downgrade situation (i.e., refund of the fare difference or accommodation on the next available flight in the booked class of service). The point stands, though, that most passengers who are willing to shell out for a J ticket wouldn't be interested in a downgrade to Y regardless of downgrade compensation, but the offer isn't quite as insane as it was made out to be.

Right - AA is still obligated to refund the fare difference between the two cabins. That said, I still wouldn't take the offer on a trip that long.

Can you clarify: Did you pay $3,600 for LAX>FCO in C all the way or C and J?
