I think what [MENTION=227449]garykung[/MENTION] is saying is that downgrade compensation is
above and beyond what an airline is legally obligated to offer in a downgrade situation (i.e., refund of the fare difference or accommodation on the next available flight in the booked class of service). The point stands, though, that most passengers who are willing to shell out for a J ticket wouldn't be interested in a downgrade to Y regardless of downgrade compensation, but the offer isn't quite as insane as it was made out to be.
