It has been confirmed by AA that they will be moving all flights back to LHR T3 as of 12 July 2022:
https://www.aa.com/i18n/travelInformation/destinationInformation/lhr-airport.jsp

We 're moving all operations to Terminal 3 on July 12, 2022.

Until then, if you're flying to New York (JFK), Dallas Fort Worth (DFW), Los Angeles (LAX) and Miami (MIA) you’ll check-in and depart from Terminal 5.

Remember to check your flight status before you go to the airport and arrive at least 3 hours before your scheduled departure time.

Has anyone heard if the AA lounge in T3 will also be re-opening next week?

Nothing's been said, and I would assume no. But if you have lounge access, you can go to the Cathay or Qantas lounges which are much better than the Admiral's Club ever was. You can also go to the BA lounge.

FWIW, my EDI-LHR-JFK ticket in August had a short connection and would not have qualified for MCT after the AA move to T3. I haven't received a notification yet, but to try and get out ahead of things, I DMed AA's Twitter and asked if they would rebook me on an earlier EDI-LHR flight because of the issue. They recognized why and did it without any problem.

Yes - good idea. I just messaged AA on Twitter and asked for a later flight to JFK.... Hopefully it doesn't mess with my SWU to First, but I'd rather be on a plane than not.

Flew AA38 MIA - LHR last night in business. Asked the pilot who was passing my seat while boarding which Terminal at LHR would it be, and he wasn't certain. We arrived on time and held on the ground at Terminal 3 until another AA plane cleared our gate. So the move to Terminal 3 has been made.
Thousands of people from different flights were waiting for immigration control gates but it moved fast. Bags just coming on conveyor when we arrived in Baggage Hall. From Landing to getting on the bus to the car rental was about 45 minutes.

Any word on whether the Admirals Club opened in LHR T3 today?

In the current climate it takes AA months to (re)open a lounge operation the size of the LHR AC. The move back to T3 was thrown together over the past 3 weeks.

I'd be shocked if it reopens before the end of the summer.

Flew through LHR today, ABSOLUTELY INSANE.

Transit security at T3 was a single line, about 200 people deep. I decided to clear immigration (no wait at all) and try my luck with landside security (big mistake).

T3 checkin area was a mad house, they blocked all the escalators/elevators to the departure level so that all the passengers are funneled through a single set of escalators. The wait to even get upstairs to the security lobby took about 20mins.

Once upstairs, there was thankfully a premium security line where I waited about another 20mins. But the regular security line must've had literally thousands of people. If I had to guess, the wait was 2+ hours in the regular line.

This is helpful, as I'm originating at T3 soon. Couple of questions:

1) Did you get a feel for any impediments approaching premium check-in? (you were already checked in, so I'm guessing you might not have taken notice)
2) Did you see any AA personnel assisting passengers? (in the past, Keys were often escorted).

Basically, I'm trying to translate your transit experience into my originating plan.

Welcome home/back - Jame

Not AA specific, but Gatwick was also a mess. I guess I'll consider this to be a PSA: do whatever it takes to 1) not fly via a London airport right now and 2) not check baggage.

Madrid is a dream by contrast this summer.

MAD is not necessarily great if you are having to go through immigration tho. Tbh most major airports in Europe are having problems of one sort or another to different extents. I am not sure any of the main hubs are safe, although I think HEL seems to be operating well atm.

I had time to go through immigration/passport control at MAD last week - enough of a layover to go to the Vasquez lounge. Security there was simple compared to LGW/LHR.

and yet at another time of day it would have been a lot worse. This is the problem, it’s so variable, go to T3 on a Saturday morning and you get long security queue, go on a weekday later afternoon and it will be much more like pre covid norm.

Likely true. I was talking to one of the secondary security scanners at South Terminal screening at LGW (#1 forgot I had a snow globe in my bag for the GF which should have been placed in a clear plastic bag and #2 my Amex Plat card with its rigid metal backing set off enough concern for secondary review). Screener said he had never seen crowds like this before and he really did not see any let up - regardless of time of day.
