I would have done that but the last AA flight is at 7pm LGA to DCA.
That too is a violation of the QF arrival at 4:40pm at JFK.
I could always buy a ticket on that or the JFK to DCA on DL at 9:15pm.
Now AA has removed me from QF JFK to LAX with the replacement LAX to DCA that now they won’t ticket.

Perhaps just take a train or take a flight in the morning - both would seem to be preferable to 7 hours in LAX

OP certainly doesn't have to sit at LAX for 7 hrs if he doesn't want to.

Just for starters, I see on a random date in September:

LAX-DFW-DCA, dep. 8:41am arr. 7:56pm
LAX-ORD-DCA, dep. 9:40am arr. 7:59pm
LAX-PHX-DCA, dep. 10:05am arr. 8:21pm
LAX-CLT-DCA, dep. 8:50am arr. 7:45pm

Given that this was AA's schedule change, and OP now sits with an illegal connection, AA will be more than happy to switch him to any of the above.
