Splitting and Adding Segments to an AA Award on Hold
I recently put an AA Award on hold for 2 people from DFW-DOH on Qatar Airways. I am planning on adding a segment on the tail end for DOH-KTM when they become available. I will also need to add a segment from the origin airports to DFW. The problem is that our origin airports are different. I am starting from SAN and my travel partner is starting from MSY. I was wondering what the best practice would be?
Should I first add the DOH-KTM segment, then ask the agent to split the PNR and then add the differing first segments? I know this overly complicated but I wanted to reserve the DFW-DOH segment as soon as possible in case it was grabbed by someone else.

First get everything on hold. Then call AA to stitch it together. Id be surprised if you find domestic saaver space. Ultimately for different starting cities you will likely need to split the reservation. Do that only when you find the initial segments with availability.
I just did a version of this both directions through Doha and it worked pretty well.
