Routing Rules
Hi, I'm looking to use AA miles on Malaysia airline, according to TPG(https://thepointsguy.com/2016/08/max...routing-rules/), I could fly from NYC(NA) to KUL(Asia 2) then from KUL(Asia 2) to PVG(Asia2) with one award. However I just looked at AA.com, it would cost 70k for JFK-KUL and another 22.5k for KUL-PVG. Am I missing something? Thanks for your help

Is your connection in KUL under 24 hours?
Unfortunately, the airline does not allow stopovers. This means that if you have layovers of more than four hours domestically (with some manual exceptions, like if the next departing flight to your destination is later than that) or 24 hours when traveling internationally, you will be charged for two separate awards.

Apparently I didn't look thoroughly, JFK-KUL award on AA.com has 3 segments, JFK-ORD, ORD-NRT and NRT-KUL. KUL-PVG award is direct flight. so according to the link provided by 3Cforme, AA allows 4 segments on international one way award. So JFK-ORD-NRT-KUL-PVG is 4 segments. It should be one award instead of two, shouldn't it? But either way, it's weird that only NRT-KUL-PVG are in business seats, JFK-ORD-NRT are in economy seats, why would I fork out 70k for economy seats? Makes no sense. And how do I book MH flight on aa.com? I thought by entering KUL as transit country it would be MH operated flights. Guess not

That said, when using the multi city booking aa.com will automatically price out each segment individually. Go to aa.com, put the flights you found on hold (for the higher mileage), then call AA to have an agent manually price it to see if it can be booked as a single award.
I'd say its doubtful, but you never know, there have been tons of instances where a given award routing might look invalid but AA's computers still price it as a single award.

It appears to me that this routing exceeds MPM25. MPM for JFK-PVG is 8832. MPM25 is 11,040.
JFK-ORD-NRT-KUL-PVG is 12,724 miles. You get an 1100 mile deduction for routing through ORD. So now you're at 11,624 which still exceeds MPM25.
That's my interpretation anyway. There are others on this board who are much more knowledgeable on this topic than I.
I hope this helps.

Will do. Thanks for the help. Another question, now I need to book a return flight. I don't see Asia 2 is mentioned here(https://thepointsguy.com/2016/08/max...routing-rules/) as an origin. There is no availability at all on JAL but CX has tons, can I do PVG-HKG-YVR-JFK? Both PVG and HKG are in the same region, so YVR would be considered second region which is allowed I assume? Also PVG-HKG-YVR-JFK is under MPM25.

Is SYD-NAN-HKG-AUH-DUB be a valid routing?
SYD-NAN-HKG on FJ, then HKG-AUH-DUB on EY?
I'm getting the mileage to be 14,503, under MPM+25%, both inbound and outbound at AUH are with EY.
