Shortly after 9/11 I flew on DL, LGA-DCA rt for around $40--it was on a Saturday.

You’ll get a 55 minute flight done in about 1.5-2hrs and a 10-20 minute bus ride at LAX... sounds like a good deal.

I've booked a few last minute SFO-LAX round-trips.

I also wanted first class.

I paid a fair bit more than $250.

For the record - your brother could get an award ticket if available, without paying the fare (but still the fees).

“Last minute” is a little vague, but a quick check of LAX-SFO for Nov 16-18 prices at $318 ($522 First). So $241 doesn’t sound unusual for this route and no, you wouldn’t expect F or even MCE.
