Welcome to the 2017 "NEWBIE LOUNGE"
Ask Your Consolidated / Combined AA Questions Here (flame free)
MODERATOR GUIDEPOST:
(This post can only be edited by moderators.)

Welcome to the Newbie Lounge!
Welcome to Flyertalk!

The Newbie Lounge is a place for newer and less experienced members to ask their questions about American Airlines and the AAdvantage program and have answered by our more experienced and knowledgeable members. Feel free to ask any question related to American Airlines and AAdvantage here.

NOTE: This is a "flame free" thread; flaming, personal criticism for "failing to search" etc. is not allowed (if posted, the post will be summarily deleted, the poster subject to sanctions).

Advanced questions posed by veteran FT users may be moved and / or merged into existing master or GUIDE threads, most of which have Wikiposts at the top of the page that contain summaries of important information.

We volunteer Moderators monitor this "lounge" thread to assist you as well. When browsing the fora, look at the page tops of the various forums. There will be a menu, and often "sticky" threads, and threads with header "wiki posts" (created and maintained by the FlyerTalk community) with important information relating to that forum / topic.

Don't hesitate to contact a moderator or another member if you have any additional questions. You can PM the Moderators by clicking on , which pops up a message box; the message goes to all this forum's Moderators. Note that unlike some sites with paid staff moderators, FlyerTalk Moderators are volunteers, and most work, travel, go on holiday, etc. You can Private Message us using the PM system (My Flyertalk) and our handles.

We're glad you've chosen to join the Flyertalk frequent flyer community!

Q. How can I find information more easily than reading through all the threads? Now that I'm here, what do I do next?

Check out the following resources:

Searching can be key to finding important information and answers without waiting for someone to drop by and answer, and it helps prevent that information fragmentation. FlyerTalk Advanced Search can seem quirky to the infrequent user, but it's fairly powerful if one knows how to use it. There are several ways to search:

Forum basics: Now that the new AA has become by some measures "the world's largest airline", this new, combined has become a "mega-forum", very large, very active - and theoretically very difficult to find information and easy to lose one's place. Having to search for and sort through dozens - or more - of threads on baggage, airports, minimum connect times or the like could soon become unproductive and discouraging.

To prevent this from occurring, please note we try to:

Keep a few "sticky" threads: such as GUIDE posts, OSO / IROPS, etc. for urgent and quick reference, such as basic "where do I find" reasons

Keep threads to specific topics: Prevent information fragmentation and loss by consolidating questions, answers and discussion of one topic contained in one thread. (This also honors those members who have already shared valuable information and experiences.)

"Popular" threads are likely to have a Wikipost at the head that will summarize important information and have resource links. These are "community property", and as any wiki are established, maintained and updated by the members (with 90 days of tenure and 90 posts on FlyerTalk).

You may find your question or post merged into one of those threads. Be sure that we will leave a link behind from your original thread, and to look up to see if there's a wiki with information. We apologize for any possible inconvenience or difference between this forum and others, but we think you'll like some of the resources and tools here to enable more convenient, comfortable travel on AA and greater knowledge sharing.

Keep it welcoming: We're proud the members of both FFPs have kept the brickbats to a minimum; we want this forum to be welcoming, civil and information rich, so name calling (including calling a member one disagrees with "AApologist") and snark are not tolerated. Posts with such are likely to be summarily deleted in their entirety; repeated such behavior may result in suspension of one's membership privileges or being banned from this forum. Let's keep it friendly and in accordance with the FT Rules.

FlyerTalk Rules (We all agree to abide by these, and are held accountable.)
NOTE: The older AA NEWBIE LOUNGE post thread is here

I'm based in Australia so will call as a last resort.

You are correct, it's a codeshare.
Do you know if they will refund or put me onto another AA/Codeshare flight?

The more information you can share, the more effectively we can answer.

(AA has an Australia number to the Fiji call centre.)

It's BOS-PIT on AA4107 (operated by Air Wisconsin) in the month of April.

Thanks for the heads up, didn't realise there was an AU number to call

Hello,

Can i get an estimate of EQM and EQD for the following:

TUS/DFW/ORD on AA with the following Fare Classes S/S.
Then ORD/AUH booked on Etihad flight number(Not AA but has an AA flight number) Fare Class C

Return:

AUH/DFW on Etihad flight number (Not AA Flight but has an AA flight number) Fare Class H
Then DFW/TUS on American fare class G.

From the following page:

https://www.aa.com/i18n/travel-info/...ad-airways.jsp

I'm getting a total of 15519 miles based upon the fare codes.

For the EQD's, do they only count on AA flights and not Etihad's?

I ask because if i can do the platinum challenge for this trip and qualify i will pursue it.

Thanks

Welocome to FlyerTalk.

As your flights are marketed by AA, you will earn EQM as if you were flying on AA for purposes of all (EQM, EQD, Challenge). The aa.com AA charts are your guide, and the award miles I'll be awarded based on status (you can buy Platinum for a bit more when you buy your Challenge and have all Platinum benefits) and the base fare and carrier based fees (not Inc,using government fees an taxes).

Risk or Cons of buying separate tickets?

was looking for a flight and found buying two separate tickets is cheaper.

As AA protects customers connecting oneworld to onewolrd, are there any risk or cons about buying separate two tickets?

In my case, I will get two round trip tickets like
A - B - A (AA stock/metal domestic flight)
B - C - B (AA stock/metal international flight)

When I get A - B - C - B - A as a single ticket, price is higher more than 20%.
Transit time on both directions are over three hours.

Is this normal or cased by error or marriage ?

P.S.
I already got another AA ticket from my home to A.

Are vouchers tax exempt?

I was just ticketed using a voucher I received for VDB. I noticed on the receipt that they charged me taxes.

When I used it previously to get tickets I was not charged taxes.

Am I due a refund and who should I contact?

Thanks so much.

Booked a discounted Y itinerary including a transpac segment early last month, with the trip starting several months from now.

Later that month I called AA to change the date of my return, and they managed to do so with virtually no fare difference by slightly adjusting my return routing (but keeping the same flight for the transpac).

At the same time of this change I requested a mileage upgrade to J for the transpac segment, and they put me on the wait list as there was no inventory. I don't remember if I provided a credit card or not (sometimes they ask and sometimes they don't).

Anyway, two weeks after that (about one week ago), my seat assignment for the transpac segment got knocked out on my app. When I went to put it back in, my cabin had changed to J. After assigning myself a J seat, I double checked the reservation details on the web, and the last segment was clearly listed as "business."

This would seem like a cleared upgrade, but there has been no contact from AA by email or phone regarding the copay or mileage deduction. None of my cards have been charged, nor have the 25k miles been deducted. Also, when viewing the upgrade status of the itinerary, this segment's is listed as "not applicable."

What is going on here? Is this a cleared mileage up request, some other kind of upgrade, or a mistake?

It cleared but you haven't been reticketed yet. Basically your reservation has been upgraded, but the ticket to pay for the flight hasn't. You can call in and they should do it over the phone. Else you can wait and it should be done at some point before travel. Especially if it's a way off the ticketing can be delayed. Allows them to take care of tickets departing sooner.

Of course taxes are due. It's just a FOP. Taxes are due based on the fare.

So at the point of reticketing the miles will be subtracted and credit card charged? Will I be notified of this via email?

Also, what is the booking code for mileage upgrades to J?

How far in advance of travel are you buying? More than 60 days away and I would be concerned about schedule changes. There's oneworld IROPs protection but I'll let JonNYC comment on applicability to two separate AA tickets bought to beat fare rules.

Thank you for your comment.
My trip is planned thru Apr - May. Schedule change is the most probable risk.

I hope AA protection covers schedule change.

Flying MU PVG-ORD on a J DL award. If I buy separate AA ORD-DTW, can I drop bags at T5 or have to schlep to T3?

Long time lurker.

Stupid question.

When I log into my account now, last year I earned platinum. It states on the account summary page, in 2016, you earned 73911 EQMs and 15 EQSs.

But at the top of the account summary it says "Progress to Gold (YTD)". I thought it would say Progress to Platinum Pro (YTD).

I assume they mean this is to retain status for next year correct?
