AA2450 Complimentary Viasat gate to gate wifi today (to merge)

Just got off AA2450 AUS-ORD. The flight had complimentary gate to gate WiFi. I hadn't seen anything about this but my apologies if gate to gate WiFi has been discussed elsewhere. The flight was an older 737-800.

AA is replacing gogo with viasat satellite based wifi. This is gate to gate.

As only a small set of aircraft have it now, I believe it is complimentary for the time being.

Interesting. Either I've been very unlucky or the roll-out is going very slowly because this is the first time I've had this service. And I had about 150 domestic segments last year.

Looks like, based on fleet numbers this will be retrofitted to the 738 and 321 fleets, while the 319 and 320s get 2Ku from Gogo.

I'm going to tweet them and see if they will add that partner to their plan. This is a huge reason I'm also with them. Without it I'm going to dump 'em.

On their earnings call ViaSat mentioned that they had recently started retrofitting existing AA aircraft with viasat's Ka band satellite service. They are line fitting the Ka service to all the new AA 737Max's It sounded like they anticipated they would be trying to complete most of the retrofits this year. FWIW, ViaSat is bringing online it's new ViaSat2 satellite this month and it will a ton of capacity to their network so the amount of bandwidth available to individual aircraft should increase soon.

I've been wondering the same. Does Gogo have a new comparable product that competes, or is Gogo on their way out at an industry level? If so, I wonder how Tmobile will respond.

I don't know what Gogo is offering for a multi-carrier satellite pass but they have about 380 Delta aircraft fitted with their 2Ku satellite wifi service, going to more than 600. It's being fitted to mainline narrowbodies for now, as widebodies got the earlier single-band satellite service.

I also hope Amex Business cards are updated to provide free access - now it is just Gogo.
