Negative. Occasional (and very old, predominantly) reports of that, usually out of LHR (was 100% against policy -and- a good chunk of the reports turned out to be Non-EPs on gifted SWUs-- before that distinction (VIP1 vs VIP) was widely known) but no change to upgrade priority.

He looked up my record and noted I had 2.5 million and concluded that my SWU would clear for the one remaining F seat on the 777W LHR LAX leaving that day. It did.

Has AA changed its practice on ranking SWU upgrades?
Nope, that agent was full of it.

No. The "senior agent at AA Premium Check-in at LHR T3" was following the time honoured tradition at AA of making some crAAp up and spewing it as if we're definitive if they do not know the actual rules.

Your SWU a learned over the others for the same reasons it has cleared previously.

I'd add that, mostly if you're interested in elite status with AA, buying economy and upgrading with miles/copay does not earn the 2x EQMs and 1.5x bonus miles that you'd earn if you buy business outright (http://www.aa.com/i18n/AAdvantage/ea...s/american.jsp)

What he was saying made no sense to me (if they were going to use total miles I figured they would use BIS miles and he was quoting my total miles), but he appeared supremely confident.

The gate agent who upgraded me told me I was the only one on the upgrade list so its clear to me how I got upgraded.
