American Airlines will shift its Sydney-Los Angeles flights to a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner from November 8, 2017. The advanced jet replaces the larger Boeing 777-300ER and will see first class dropped from the trans-Pacific route, although business travellers on a budget will appreciate the introduction of American Airlines' new premium economy seating on the Boeing 787.

Lounges: by oneworld status, or by class of service - and Admirals Club members flying out on AA (or an AA marketed flight) get to use the QANTAS Business Lounge.

Qantas First Lounge - spa, restaurant: First or oneworld Emerald passengers

Qantas Business Lounge: Business, oneworld Sapphire pax and Admirals Club members

On arrival

Connections:

International- no need to collect baggage if allowed by your airline(s), follow flight connections signs to immigration, flight connections desk. If you are not allowed to through check your bags you must process immigration, collect bags, process customs, proceed to the airline Check in areas and process security to get back airside.

Domestic: the domestic terminals 2 and 3 are 2.5 miles / 4 km away. Figure on a half hour at least to transfer, and if you use landside road transfers during high traffic times, longer (airside plan minimum half an hour). Talking about peak times, it can take two hours with queues waiting to board shuttle busses.

If traveling on via Qantas once you're landside after the Duty Free gantlet, follow the signs and go right. You'll eventually arrive at the baggage check facility, process security and take an airside shuttle that will end up with you're being at Gate 15 airside in the QF domestic terminal. It's called "Qantas seamless transfer".

Historical note: Pan American World Airways was the first American airline offering commercial passenger service to Australia, beginning Feb 1947 to SYD (with several stops), adding MEL in 1958. United acquired Pan Am's Pacific routes, operating them as of Feb 1986.

American Airlines initially operated to Sydney (and later also Melbourne between August 1970 through to March 1974. AA reestablished service with a DC-10 LAX-HNL-SYD return 4x weekly in Feb 1990, but ended that service March 1992.

I wouldn't hold your breath for that. It will likely only be the "standard" for AA when a 3rd party (e.g. Qantas in this case) actually leads them to water and shoves their head in it, forcing them to drink.

Wouldn't that third party in the case of LAX-HKG be CX?

Time will tell; it's not clear the business dynamics are the same between CX and AA as they are between Qantas and AA. Also, CX may not play their hand as aggressively as QF did. I guess we shall see...

Only if CX and AA sign a joint venture/revenue sharing style agreement, as QF and AA have and are attempting to expand as part of this new route. QF and AA want to effectively go metal neutral, which for QF means that AA needs to bring itself up to QF's quality in terms of catering and meal options, since AA is clearly inferior to QF in this regard.

OK guys - I'll take one for the team. I promise to be on the inaugural flight from LAX to HKG in first class (and you all know which seat I want). That way I can report back firsthand on the service level.

Well, common (business) sense would suggest that if they are NOT in a JV, then they'll have to compete for passengers, and one way to do that is through services/amenities. Of course they'll probably just choose to compete on price. But maybe they'll learn that - golly gee - we really *can* offer a premium product if we try and if we spend money on it! One can hope.

It should also be noted that C availability has opened up for those that want to purchase Y and upgrade to J using SWUs. More availability in Jan than Feb.

Was excited to get an alert that C2 opened for our 9 Feb AA72 SYD => LAX flight today. Didn't expect anything to clear until that week-of, but this is an exciting sign!

Would only be J, and SYD-PER is relatively widely available in J. BME is mostly served out of PER by QF.

In Australia there is no domestic F on any airlines. J at best, a bit like USA domestic F.
Some SYD-PER aircraft have international style J. But does vary with aircraft.
Domestic aircraft are not set up like the long haul aircraft.

wifi?

For those who have taken this flight - was the wifi reliable and available the whole flight? How much does it cost?

Yes, the wifi was reliable and available the entire flight. It cost $19 for the duration of the flight but there are cheaper options for shorter time periods.

I found some more photos of the lunch service on flight 72 on 12/27/15. This is the heirloom tomato salad with mozzarella and pesto.
