Qantas and Oneworld alliance partner American Airlines will tomorrow launch joint Sydney-New Zealand-Los Angeles flights for take-off in 2016, breaking Air New Zealand's monopoly on the NZ-US route.
American Airlines Chairman and CEO Doug Parker and Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce will hold a press conference in Wellington on Wednesday morning to make a "major announcement for the New Zealand market".

Not much detail. Guess we'll know more tomorrow.

Qantas, American to announce 2016 LAX-AKL-SYD / Sydney-Auckland-Los Angeles flights
(Dear Moderator, please find the proper home for this thread)
Trying to plan a ski holiday in Aug 2016 to NZ. Looking to fly Oneworld alliance, ideally AA, to AKL in Business class. Need to pay my way. Fares are over the top. Feels like an airline(s) monopoly. Looking for 8/26 to 9/5 from LAX to AKL.
Fares are coming back on google flights and yapta and AA website at a minimum of $7500. CRAZY. Any suggestions as to how I can get a better fare?
thanks in advance,
tom

...because it is.. The only Airline that currently flies from the continental US to AKL is Air NZ. They have a 100% monopoly on the route until United starts flying it.
The next line is "Welcome to Trans Pacific", Unlike TransAtlantic, there isn't mistake fares, or $2000 trips like you find on BA in business. The TransPac routes are always going to be expensive in J, They have never been cheap, This is why people like me who have to fly those routes all the time just simply rely on miles for either J/F redemptions or simply book a W fare on QF and then upgrade it to J with 40k miles each way.
Want to fly it cheaper with cash fares? Break up the trip via HNL, or fly via Asia and hope for a good sale fare in J to a city there.
If you are hoping to get a cheap OW fare, You are just not going to find it on QF, or even if you were to fly *A, NZ isn't going to let you have a J fare for anything less than 5k a person.

update
Called AA exec plat desk. for the flights I chose (AA73&72) 77W's they cannot confirm Upgrade with certificates nor can I book the flight and use miles + co pay to confirm upgrade now. NOT one seat sold, yet agent told me that they sell some seats, then they release an award, upgrade seat. Does anyone know if this is true?
Not interested in confirmed coach, row 16 and then my upgrade NOT coming.
Is there a strategy I'm missing? Routing thru Asia takes way too long. I can only go for 7-8 days.
thanks

$5000 is a really good deal for business North America-Australia/NZ round-trip on QF/AA/DL/VA/UA. I'm not kidding.

AA is highly unlikely to release upgrade space into business class until 100 hours before the flight for LAX-SYD and return, so you honestly have no chance of confirming a SWU or miles+copay upgrade more than 100 hours in advance.

Another option is to go through a consolidator but not sure how much they would help you save.
