Weird. I almost never fly on Sunday mornings. I transited ATL a few times early on Sundays and they were offering comp alcohol, but could not sell anything from the 'Luxury Bar' until noon. That was really my only experience with that. I don't really see why liquor laws should vary by county.

One small out-station, and I can't remember where, had some sort of rule where even once on the plane, alcohol could not be served before a certain time.....had to wait until the plane was airborne. Utah maybe? Can't remember where I was, but it shocked me.
In certain states, PDB alcohol (by definition on the ground) requires airlines to purchase a liquor license, and not all airlines buy licenses in every such state. And occasionally, airlines are hit with liability in dram shop cases, like US in New Mexico a few years back. IIRC, as a result, New Mexico yanked the US license, which terminated all alcohol PDBs on US in New Mexico. Once airborne, state laws are irrelevant, and airlines can do whatever they want.

In first, it certainly does. In coach, many early morning flights are catered only with vodka and no other liquor.

I've never seen anyone have an issue getting something alcoholic to drink in the air for a 5am or 6am flight.
Bars in NY can't serve before 8am.

Then that changed this week. Knocked back many a Bloody Mary on Sunday mornings in AC's at DFW.
DFW can't sell before noon, but they can comp....free stuff. Charlotte can't serve it before noon PERIOD.....buy or comp.

Are you kidding?? If I don't have a glass of Bloody Mary, Mimosa, or Sangria by 1030am on a Sunday morning I'm gonna be in a mood!

Nope he's not. I discovered this a couple of weeks ago. The funny part is a New Yorker came down here a few years ago and complained about our Sunday liquor laws - which are apparently exactly the same as New York's.

I believe the Sunday column should differentiate between paid and comp as well since in some locations they're different (ATL, DFW).

Interesting—at PHL and DCA, the ACs start serving paid and complimentary alcohol for on-premises consumption at the earliest time local law permits the sale of alcohol for on-premises consumption. To the extent that clubs in airports like DFW and ATL start earlier, I assume they begin serving comp drinks immediately after they open because local law does not treat the distribution of unpriced drinks as a form of serving alcohol on-premises. However, if those clubs don't begin serving comp drinks until after they open, but before they begin serving paid drinks, I assume it's just an airline (or airport) policy that could change at any time.

It's the former. Comp beverages are offered upon opening/bar opening while for purchase options cannot be sold until a specific time. I know this to be the case in ATL and someone upthread noted the same was true for DFW.
