This route is using Boeing 777-200 aircraft right now so all business class seats should be lie flat. For example today's Flight 7 is using aircraft N799AN, which is a 777-200 with 37 B/E Aerospace Lie Flat business class seats. These seats are new (within last 18 months) and generally preferred over the previous generation of Zodiak lie flat seats, although the two are fairly comparable.
You should confirm that the aircraft currently assigned for the your exact travel dates is a 777-200. As long as it is a 777-200 (772 in AA coding) you will get a lie flat seat in business class as American has completed the retrofit of all 777-200s.

AA is now all 1-2-1 lie flat on every widebody plane (773/772/763/A330) in the fleet.
Doesnt matter which type.

We fly DFW to Hawaii at least twice a year. Since last July they have put the newly refurbished 777-200 on the routes, with either the BEA or Zodiac international Business Class lie flat suites (AA brands these cabins as First Class on domestic routes, which has been source of confusion for some for many years. If one is flying the 777-200 to an international destination, the same seats/cabin would be branded as Business Class.) We are coming up to our third RT now from DFW to Hawaii since July. Each time we have had the BEA lie flat suite on the 777-200. Very roomy and quite comfy. The 777-200's now have the Premium Economy Cabin also, which is another choice for the long DFW Hawaii flights.

Wouldnt this violate the alternate airport plus 45 minute rule? Something like LHR-DTW May Be more acceptable as there are plenty of enroute places to land, but DFW-HNL, theres a big slab of ocean water and thats about it if short on HNL...

Haven't been to Hawaii in a few months.
Do the LAX-Hawaii A321s still have gogo or have they updated to Viasat?

Flights from DFW to/from Hawaii
Following up on prior post re first class on American to Hawaii from DFW (I asked about fully lie-flat seats).
Flying to Maui OGG and returning from HNL. we booked first class tickets on flight 7 to Maui and returning on flight 102 from HNL. just looked at the confirmation which for some reason indicates that the flight to OGG is in first, but the return from HNL is business. Is there a reason for the difference in designation? The aircraft for both flights are listed as 772. Is it possible/likely the return flight will be on a different/smaller aircraft? Appreciate any guidance and/or recommendations.

I hope I am posting to this forum correctly as I was directed to this site by a TripAdvisor destination expert. I am Trying to confirm whether the first class seats from DFW to OGG (Flight 7) and from HNL to DFW (flight 102) are lie flat or angled. Several postings on TripAdvisor indicate that despite the appearance of lie flat seats on these routes due to the 1-2-1 configuration, they may actually be only angled seats.
Would appreciate any thoughts/comments/recommendations.
also would appreciate guidance as to whether the post should be directed elsewhere within the flyer talk site.
thanks,

AA has to meet several requirements flying to Hawaiian destinations from DFW: the aircraft must have the range (ability to fly the distance with sufficient fuel and required fuel reserves) and ETOPS capability (meet the FAA requirements for extended range over water with twin engine aircraft).
AA cant use 737s - even if they had the range AA has no ETOPS certified 737s. The only A321s AA has that are ETOPS certified have the required range only from the west coast - and even then, they are often weight-restricted because of prevailing winds.
So, from DFW, AA can use 777s or 767s. They have the range, theyre ETOPS certified and they all have fully horizontally flat seat beds (as do all AA widebodied jet aircraft - NONE have angled flat seats). While A330s meet the ETOPS and range requirements, DFW does not base A330s, so theyre outside our discussion.
As to classes, AA generally calls Business class First Class when the aircraft are on domestic runs. They actually use Business class fare codes for domestic First. The only time theyd have Business and First on a domestic aircraft are on the two aircraft types that have Flagship First / three full classes: A321T transcontinental models of the A321 Sharklets or 32B, and the 777-300ER / 77W - never used to Hawaii, as the A321T has neither the range nor ETOPS certification and the relatively few 77Ws are only used for premium destinations.
Regardless of whether youre in Business or First DFW-Hawaii or return, youll be in the front cabin in both 772s and 763s, in fully horizontal flat, all aisle access seats.
