Didn't reach your desired elite status?

Introducing new ways to meet your elite status goal starting in January

The 2014 AAdvantageŽ elite status qualification year ends on December 31, and we know some of you may not quite reach your goal by the end of the year. That's why, starting in January, we're offering you two ways to elevate your status.

Boost: For the first time ever, if you end the year close to AAdvantage Executive Platinum, Platinum, or Gold status but don't quite make it, you can boost to the next level.

Renew: If you are an elite status member in 2013 but aren't able to retain your status by the end of the year, you are eligible for a status renewal.[/quote]

Buy my status back?

Hopefully this isn't old news. (I did search)
Was injured and off work last half of 2013, and lost my Platinum status.

Now for $1199, I can buy my status back?

My flying pattern is back to
normal... but split between AA and SW now.

Thoughts?

If I recall, you get the status but not the miles, so you would be a low level Plat. Nobody but you can decide if that's worth $1200 bucks.

Have you ever done a status challenge with AA before? That would probably be a cheaper way to get your status back... or if you're ineligible for a challenge with AA, you could do a 90 day status trial with US Air and extend it until Feb 2015 by meeting their flying requirements that they have on their website... you can now get AA flights credited toward US status... I'd say those are both better options than paying $1199 to buy it back

Other than, perhaps, bragging rights on FT, is there any differentiation in PLT members? Seems to me that if you're PLT, you're PLT.

This is a US rule, not applicable to AA.

Got the same offer today from AA, not worth it IMHO. Had Platinum last year and gold before that, new job doesnt fly as much.

Secure Platinum status for only $1199
Secure Gold status for only $649

I wasn't sure what AA's rules are but since the poster lost Plat and was asking about buying it back I figured it was safe to assume he was talking about US status.

I think certain perks use miles flown for establishing the pecking order within a given status level, like the UDU's on US.

His profile lists he was AA Plat and the $1199 offer is also for AA Plat buy-back.

This thread is an excellent example of the reason why topics should be posted to the appropriate pre-merger forum until such time as a post-merger consolidated frequent flyer programme is in place.

In this case the question is about AAdvantage. Since it is still operating as a distinct programme, this question is being moved over to the relevant thread in the pre-merger American Airlines forum.

Please note the sticky at the top of the consolidated thread which is titled Welcome to the New American Airlines Forum! PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING. With all of the changes about, it is important to know where to post, and reading that thread before posting (as the title suggests ) will help get you in the right place.

For each person it's different... it could be worth it if you usually go after comp upgrades, but not so much if you usually purchase business or F tickets

I guess it depends if your sister flies international. Last time I priced out 4 round trips to LatAm, it was $10k in J and $4k in Y. I would JUMP at the ability to upgrade 4 international round-trips for $1,800.

Although I've never been EXP, so I don't know if there's something that devalues the SWUs...

That is certainly my calculus. In fact, the fare difference is irrelevant because I'd never pay that much, but I would pay 25,000 miles and a hefty copay, so to me EXP is worth 8 times that, or well more than $1800.

After several emails, I just received a paper letter pushing the buyback. It begins:

Dear Mr. [redacted],
With busy schedules, sometimes it's hard to travel as often as we'd like. That seems to be the case here, since your travel with us was less than is needed to earn AAdvantage elite status. However, since you held Executive Platinum status in 2013, we'd like to offer you the opportunity to reach gold status for $649 or Platinum for $1,199. To learn more or to purchase online, visit aa.com/elite2014 before May 31, 2014.
I found the letter to be well written-- much more appealing than the email solicitations ("Your AAdvantageŽ Executive Platinum status has expired, which means you no longer hold elite status."). Receiving it the day after devaluation day, though, I just had to laugh...
