Cancelling a [non-refundable] Ticket

I have a question regarding cancelling a ticket. It is a non-refundable, "choice" fare ticket. I know I can't get a refund, but can I get future credit for American (like Southwest)?

Yes. You will get a credit less the change fee. Depends how you cancel it....I sometimes get a paper voucher in the mail. Sometimes I'm just told to write down the ticket number (starts with 001 - not the 6-character confirmation code) and use that to apply the funds to a future ticket.

Keep in mind those change fees, depending where you're flying, can be substantial. Just looked at a Dublin fare in March and the change fee there is up to $300 now.

Yes, $300 for my DFW-HKG RT too.

I was told in order to use the credit in the future, I DON'T need an e-tic #, just the Record Locator.

That's incorrect; you need the ticket number. The six character PNR recycles.

During that call, I was somewhat persistent about getting the e-tic #, but AA agent insisted that I don't need one. Well, got to call again!

Thanks JDiver.

Don't forget schedule changes-

I forget what the cutoffs are, but it's something like 45-90 min will allow a cancellation to voucher, and 90+ a full refund.
