For DFW-MSY, N fares are currently $100 each way. (O fares are cheaper, but unavailable on many days). Moving up to an S fare increases it to $117.

So a $17 upcharge each way for 5 RTs is $17x5x2 = $170, for 30K miles.

I think your logic is possibly flawed a bit (maybe)...

The moving up in pricing makes total sense if you were already planning trips such as this but that would be rare for most people.

With the promotion currently running for purchasing miles, it would be less expensive to buy 40,000 miles (BIS miles + 100% elite bonus + 30,000 bonus) than to spend time actually flying.

$1170 flying vs. $855 purchasing (this includes a $30 processing fee)

Of course, the caveat here is that the flown miles actually count toward MM status, whereas purchased miles don't. @:-)

And, neither would the bonus miles from this promo.

Right, but the pure BIS miles will be MM miles. And of course, the flight miles are also EQMs so they can help requalify for elite status.

So, $1170 for 5,000 BIS/EQM + 5,000 Elite bonus (if applicaple) + 30,000 promo bonus = 40,000 RDMs

Or, $855 + tax for 40,000 RDMs.

EDIT: AA now has DFW-MSY for $96+ roundtrip as a Q fare for 8/21/12 -10/4/12 so the buy up is much great now.

And also don't forget to add any of the following to your $1,170 total...

1. Hotel costs if spending the night.
2. Additional meal(s) if spending the night.
3. Adult beverages on Bourbon Street.
4. Parking fees / toll costs for travel to and from the airport.
5. $30 sticker for upgrading to first if not EXP. (x2)
6. Court costs associated from #3.
7. Time away from your spouse (but this might be a bonus)
8. Rental car / limo to and from the airport if spending the night.
9. Pepto Bismol / Tums for #2

I didn't say it was a good idea .

Can't see too many people intentionally hitting this. Maybe someone who takes 5 RTs in the higher class for business and happens to have them fall within the promo period. I booked one RT yesterday but it was in O, I have no chance.

According to the T/Cs, for this offer to work, you need to 1) enter the promo code as usual, and 2) register for the sweepstakes.

here is the direct link for registration in case you don't feel like watching all videos...

cheers

Thanks for the link since the two videos would not 'unlock' for me even after playing several times.

No, I certainly wasn't suggesting flying 5 round trips as MRs just to get the bonus. (If I were, I'd be looking for even cheaper routes). In fact, I can't recall a bonus that made sense to fly just for the RDMs since AA matched WNs fly-3 ex-DAL a decade ago when the Wright Amendment restrictions had just been eased.

My post was in reply to the comments above mine that suggested this promo was of no value due to the fare class restrictions. I was pointing out that in some cases the up-fare cost was small enough to make it worthwhile.

Good bonus (possibly) for folks traveling weekly for business/work.

Most of my travel booked about 4 weeks in advance is still O/Q/N. Booking last minute will almost surely drop the upgrade chances for Mon morning and Thu evening flights to 0. So, seems like a tradeoff, in some cases.

Confusing travel period

Rules in one place that travel must be completed between Sept 4 and Nov 15, which implies you could book an originating trip in July or August with a rturn on or after Sept 4 and it would qualify.
In another place it says for travel between Sept 4 and Nov 15 which implies the first possible date to originate travel is Sept 4th.
The latter (more restrictive) interpretation seems kind of dumb to me since it discourages people from booking anything between now and september.

Which is correct?
