same PNR, different boarding groups!

No status. We have seat assignments together on one side in PE, obviously one of us has the window (so group 3) while the other has the aisle seat (group 5).

Not a huge deal for us, we can board separately, or we can board with the later group and hope that there will still be overhead bin space left. But it is most peculiar. Most airlines don't separate groups traveling on the same PNR.

It's to make the boarding process smoother. Since the person in the middle seat is Group 4, then your companion in the aisle doesn't have to get up and get out of their way in order for them to get into your seat. Keeps the aisle unblocked as well.

Is this a domestic or international flight? If domestic, overhead bin space is a non-issue. For international, it's also usually been fine for me on ANA. It's not nearly as competitive for that space compared to flights on other carriers.

I know the logic, but we are seated together in Premium Economy. There is no middle seat between window and aisle. Most groups on the same PNR have contiguous seat assignments, and can be expected to figure out how to best seat themselves..

Good to know about bin space.

I now see why there is bin space. My carryon is 11kg, had to be checked at the gate. Will know for next time.

Doesn't the bag weigh the same in the hold as in the cabin? Not sure of the physics of this.

11kg isnt much but a heavy bag could fall on someone and the bins arent designed to hold as much weight as the hold

I have never had my carry on weighed on ANA I have, rarely though, seen them enforce the 1 piece policy. What airport were you flying from?

Bags weigh the same no matter where they are. But overhead bins does have load limits.

I don't know if BA still does this, but for years their carry-on weight limit was 23kg. And yet I never saw any reports of heavy carry-ons breaking the bins or passengers/crew being injured by heavy bags. Just confirms my view that most airline carry-on weight limits are ridiculously, unnecessarily low.

It is not an issue for smooth or level flight, it is an issue for the locking mechanism for cases of not smooth flight. I have seen carry on falling in case of heavy turbulence, though I can't of course say whether that was caused by over weight or the bin that was not propperly closed.

ORD. Are you saying there probably won't be a problem on our way back? (ITM-NRT in Y then NRT-ORD in PE)

I would not expect that to be a problem, no.
