Award Availability out of NYC

I've usually been able to find Business award availability from NYC to TYO if I book 340-355 days in advance before, but recently when I took a look again there's basically no availability at all no matter what I do with the dates. Has there been a change to how these tickets are released or is it just that hard to find availability and I've been lucky before?

I would guess that the new seats being introduced on the JFK route has had a lot of people interested in booking awards.

I checked as a diamond members.
Yes, very tight.
I can find only JFK-NRT on 29Oct, and 30Oct. (e.g. no availability for JFK-HND).
If you want to find JFK-NYC-JFK, almost impossible because of time zone difference.
(e.g. TYO-NYC-TYO can be booked as a same day return, but NYC-TYO-NYC can't be)

Premium heavy route with business men/women (and the few award seats released are snapped up in minutes).
To compound the situation, AMC premium members get priority for waitlists, meaning any award spaces never trickle down to the base members (i.e. become available on searches).
Be flexible on when you can travel, and search diligently, even every day or so. Also you could set up award seat alerts on EF.
It is a popular route!

Apologies for being a little OT...

Even though JFK - Tokyo availability is thin, are there routes that are less popular, thus easier to get business class awards on?
I'm based out of BOS so a positioning flight will be necessary either way. Prefer connecting from a B6 Mint route, ie: LAX, SFO, SEA.

All 3 of those airports have ANA flights. SEA is particularly nice because not only does SEA have a flight, but it's next to YVR which also has an ANA flight and is often overlooked by people searching for availability.

LAX is probably the easiest for awards.

ORD is pretty easy as well given the 2x daily frequency — and it comes with Polaris lounge access on the outbound as well.

ORD, SEA, SAN, YVR should be the easier routes to find J award space.
