AS eliminates interlining on separate tickets (chip chip chip™)

If your travel includes multiple tickets, and/or travel on more than one airline, your baggage fees and rules may be determined by the other airline. Please check your ticket, or call Alaska Airlines Reservations at 1-800-252-7522 to help determine which airline rules and fees apply to your journey. When making international connections on a separate ticket to other airlines within twelve (12) hours of arriving in the connection city, you may follow the baggage allowance and weight restrictions of the international airline - provided a ticketing and baggage agreement is in place between Alaska Airlines and the other carrier.

Baggage will only be checked to the final destination on the first ticket. Please allow enough time to collect your baggage and re–check in with the next airline. Checked baggage will not be transferred on to your next flight that's on a separate ticket. Baggage fees for each carrier may apply.

When did this policy become active? With AS almost always now requiring a separate revenue positioning flight to pick up a partner award in a gateway due to lack of AS saver award space, this really sucks.

Huge ouch.

"Please allow enough time to collect your baggage and re–check in with the next airline and insure that you have documentation, including possible visas, to enter the transit country, and time to go through entrance and exit formalities of the transit country.

So, an hour connection turns into a 3 hour connection. Because AS cares.

Based on this thread, sometime in the last 6 months. Given that they changed baggage fees at the start of 2024, maybe then?

But anyway, yeah, this is rotten since having interlining made positioning flights more tolerable, and AS has a fair number of customers in places where XXX-ANC-SEA-Award Gateway-Partner Hub-Final Destination is very possibly how they're going to fly, not being able to interline a second ticket with that itinerary ain't great. One of the few airlines left with a customer-friendly interline policy. We hardly knew ye...

Oneworld had a policy change in 2016.
OW thread --> Bag interlining issues and OW policy changes (Combined threads)

Some OW airlines have no interlining on separate tickets and/or PNR's. As a PNR can have 1, 2 or more tickets, can be a subtle difference depending on the airline.
Some OW airlines will interline on separate ticket/PNR.
Some OW airlines have variations. QF for example will interline QF to QF and QF to EK on separate PNR's. The policy states PNR (not ticket).

Definitely passenger unfriendly.

was this change published today? i was still able to get AS to check bag for free (no status) after arriving from australia

at that time, QF was being difficult and refuse to respect their own exemption clause policy to interline despite me flying QF (award tix) and AS (rev tix) https://www.qantas.com/agencyconnect...d-baggage.html

This very unfortunate. Alaska was one of the few airlines that still allowed this and I used it pretty frequently.

Many of us who live in the namesake state simply cannot buy cash tickets to some destinations as one itinerary. I used to live in BET and frequently had to buy two separate tickets – one to SEA, and one onward — because no foreign airline had ever heard of Bethel. The same goes for PUW, EAT, YKM, and a large number of small AS/QX stations.

What would be the reason behind the implementation of this policy?

Most *A carriers (including UA) will interline to *A partners on separate tix, some *A carriers (e.g., SQ) are notably more generous in their interline policies.

This is one area where *A is much more passenger friendly than OW.

maybe too many people complain abt missing / damaged luggage, and they dont want to be responsible (theoretically they are not if separate tix but maybe it is hard to determine where it went wrong in a long itinerary)

Isn't it always the last airline that is responsible, no matter what happened along the way? Or does that rule only apply to single-itinerary travel?

I'd assume it's a cost saving measure. No more training of agents on how to actually do this, fewer bags to connect to other airlines, ... Must save them a few bucks.
