Wiki for using AS (Alaska) Miles on JL (Japan Airlines)

All awards for domestic Japan will default to Economy (including international F or J award with domestic segments).
However, these can often be upgraded at reasonable cost at the ticket counter in the Japan connecting airport

Award Chart
If not listed it's not available - EXCEPTION: Hawaii-Asia awards are bookable, not yet on the chart, at the same prices as Continental U.S.-Asia
(As of March 2017, Premium Economy is no longer available)
(As of October 2019, stopovers are no longer allowed on intra Asia awards)

For 2021:
F awards are available again to book directly on AS website (no need to book J then try to change segment) as of June 12, 2021.

Right, it looks like TYO/KIX ends up being a coterminal for stopovers or something? Nice to have.

Does anyone know which U.S. cities have the best 2 F availability in advance to TYO? I would prefer to avoid doing the last minute dance and waiting until 2 weeks before, or is the best strategy to book 2 seats in Y or J and hope for F seats to become available at the last minute and pay for the change (not MVPG/75K)

Its never a sure thing, but the best bets are with LAX and JFK. I just redeemed for 2F out of LAX but JFK looked to have more seats available.

3 F seats? How far in advance did they become available? Two is pretty standard. Three at a time is rare unless close in.

Even getting that 3rd at T-90 is pretty rare, as I've only ever seen 2F available before T-14. Congrats on the grab and enjoy the trip!

So recently flew JAL F NRT-ORD. Gotta say the service was top notch. The crew seemed to really care about making sure I had an enjoyable flight. But, as for the food and hard product, I would say nice but not blown away like I have been on some other airlines.

I have HND/ORD booked on JL in mid April, which I am going to cancel, partly because of Coronavirus, but also because I got a good deal for travel directly to the USA from AKL on QF.

I am happy to pay the US$125 cancellation fee on the JL award ticket, but I am just wondering if anyone has had any success in getting AS to waive the fee for flights into or out of Japan due to Coronavirus.

I have got mine waived without question the moment I said I wanted to cancel due to the virus.

This was an intra-asia award using the stopover method booked last year.

Tokyoite - I just cancelled HND/ORD on 18 April 2020 via AS Online Help (Reservations) and they waived the cancellation fee. The points are back in my account and now just awaiting a refund of the taxes.

I have a intra-asia redemption on Jal in Apr which I did an online chat and they asked for the $125 USD saying its outside the waiver guidelines. Anyone else experienced anything different?
