AK Tail Number Instead of AS

I couldn't find a thread on this but I wouldn't be surprised if it was asked at some point.

I noticed that the 777-900ER registration numbers used to end in AS, and then in 2016 they started ending in AK.

Does this have to do with the merger at all? Why did it change?

I started wondering about it when I realized that as of right now, getting an AS (not AK) tail is a sure way of knowing the plain has no satellite wi-fi. (https://alaskafleetstatus.weebly.com/737-900er.html)
