happens to me every time. recently i've also had trouble just getting on the list consistently with an unchanged booking, despite showing F waitlisted since the time of ticketing.
if you don't show "first class waitlisted" at the time of checkin, you won't be on the departures management list. doesn't matter what an agent tells you. if that text isn't on your reservation, you ain't getting an upgrade IME. halamadrid summarizes my experiences well.

@Edgerfly - could it be a delay in showing we've been upgraded maybe? I had the same instance you did - SDC to a flight, "Waitlisted for First Class" didn't appear. and shortly after I got the email I've been upgraded.

I SDC a lot, usually at 10:01pm the night before as a gold and 99% of the time my new flight has F and premier booked solid so I end up if I am lucky in a seat a recently upgraded elites seat somewhere close to the front. But per the OP most of the time innever seem to make it ontomthr F or premier seating waitlist either. I for sure will try calling in later if I am not on the list next time.

We had a flight canceled due to lightning, missing our connection, and were rescheduled the next day. We were supposedly placed on the upgrade list, but our names never appeared on the monitor. We didn’t pursue it because no one was getting upgraded to FC on that flight.

Once out of LAX, My flight from Hong Kong got in 2 hours early so I did a SDC and was 1st on the list. They let the plane leave with 2C empty. The FA came over after take off and profusely apologized, and even offered me to move up. First time I ever saw that in almost 20 years of frequent flying.
