"The -400s are going"

From the 1/21/16 Alaska Air Q4 '15
Conference call, when analyst from Credit Suisse asked "is their flexibility to delay the retirement on the -400's?"
Andrew Harrison, Chief Commercial Officer's reply speaks volumes: "The Chief Op Officer is looking at me right now and if I was to extend the 400's I may lose some body parts. So the reality is the 400's are going...."

Great quote!

Looks like I might be on one on Saturday...they are getting a bit old.

But not as bad as AM's 73G's. Was on one last week... and the lavs didn't really lock in the back

Will be glad when they're gone...looking a bit long-in-the-tooth and switching from 16 FC seats to 12 seats when an a/c is downgraded makes for four unhappy customers. Of course there'll be the same problem with the new cabin refresh (16 on a 900, 12 on an 800) but at least there'll be the new Premium Economy (or whatever they're calling it) to try and appease those four people. Maybe don't sell the seat between them?

I think this thread is about the 737-400, not the Q400. I found the title confusing as well, especially since there is another thread you mentioned about some of the Q400s going away.

I think someone at AS just doesn't like the number 400 anymore.

I realize I'm probably in the minority, but I'm rather fond of the old -400s.

Yes, there are fewer seats in F, but the ones that are there are - in my opinion - far more comfortable than the newer seats on the -800s and -900s. And the small hassle of toting my own portable battery pack (to combat the lack of in-seat power) is vastly off-set by the superior under-seat storage space.

Not to mention those little planes seem to be faster!

I too rather enjoy the 734s. I can't exactly figure out why (I like the 739 F/Y seats just fine), but probably some nostalgia of the old plane.

Yes
Looking at 1/23/16, the 6am and 4pm flights are 734s.

Yes! I was on AS506 SEA-SNA last week on the 400. I don't actually like the old seats but the nostalgia was strong

"The 400's are going"

They discussed both the Q400 and the 737-400 in Qtrly report, and Pederson(CFO) said "as we think about the regional jets, the opportunity is as follows: One is they have increased reach vs the Q400. It delivers a better passenger experience especially on those longer stage missions than the Q400. Our competition, frankly, is using those in many of our markets and i think we want to make sure we are staying on par or better on the customer experience side. We have a much higher revenue opportunity with a three class cabin and actually, in excess of a 400 miles, the regional jet has a lower trip cost."
