AS seeks approval for SEA-CUN seasonal service
in today's press releases:
Alaska Airlines Seeks Governmental Approval to Begin Seattle-Cancun, Mexico, Service
4/7/2014 4:59 a.m.
SEATTLE — Alaska Airlines submitted its application today to begin seasonal nonstop service between Seattle and Cancún, Mexico. Pending approval by the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Mexico Dirección General de Aeronáutica Civil (DGAC), the airline plans to begin its daily service to Cancún on Nov. 6.
"As Seattle's leading airline, we're committed to offering the most nonstop service to the popular destinations our customers want to explore, including leisure hotspots like Cancún," said Joe Sprague, vice president of marketing. "Customers taking Alaska Airlines' flight to Cancún will enjoy our award-winning service and low fares."
Known for its 14-mile pristine Caribbean beach and all-inclusive resorts, Cancún is a short ferry ride to the turtle farms of Isla Mujeres and a two-hour drive from Chichén Itzá, a massive Maya archaeological site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World .
Alaska Airlines introduced service to Mexico in 1988 and operates more nonstop flights between the West Coast and Mexico than any other carrier, flying an average of 1.5 million passengers a year. Alaska already serves six Mexico beach destinations — Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo, Loreto, Los Cabos, Manzanillo, Mazatlán and Puerto Vallarta — in addition to Guadalajara and Mexico City.

It wasn't weak demand, it was that they could make more money in Hawaii.

Or wasnt there some unrest in Mexico in general that was causing less people to travel there?

I can't wait for the SEA-CUN non-stop again. One of my favourite places to visit. Great food, people and beaches.
I am not sure if fares today are that much higher. It was my understanding that Alaska stopped service when there was unrest in the area, and tourists among others were staying away.
Hopefully we will see this route daily.

Here are the average one way fares from SEA-CUN back in 2010 when the plug was first pulled and here is what they were in Q4 of 2013.
Q4 2009 - $184
Q4 2013 - $264
That's a 43% increase in average fares. So yields are a heck of a lot better. It's easy to see why it wasn't making money back when it was cut in 2010. The market was weak then and now has rebounded considerably.

I wonder if PDX/PVR 3 days and SJD the other 4 days will ever come back. That's was a nice flight for us Oregonians. It died I think in 2008/9.
