In the situation with the pricing ... yes the regulation is great. It required everyone to be on the same playing field, therefore not penalizing the airline that chose "to do the right thing" ... but when I go to a store in the U.S. they aren't required to add in tax in the advertised price...so why would an airline?
Airline taxes/fees vary considerably more, and it's dramatically higher to find out what it will be (and especially know what it will be), so it's only fair to the consumer to let them know what that will be in advance, and the only practical way to handle that is to show it at the beginning of the booking process, not more towards the end. That can be even more complicated where different routings can even potentially cause different tax/fee levels... It is good that it leveled that playing field though. |
I wrote my congress critters right after this came out. The only one that contacted me was from Sen. Murkowski's office. The lady I spoke to was completely clueless and a waste of my money since I missed the first call and had to call back.:(

Well thanks for the good news, Missy! ^^
A good way to end the old year and start out the new one! |

Caveat for travelers: even though AS will continue to check your bags through to another domestic carrier, make sure that the other carrier will also check your bags through to AS on your return flight. On a recent trip, I did not know that HA would not check our bags through from LIH to HNL to our AS flight home; our bags were too large to carry on, so we had to be a bit creative. I would have traveled with just a carry-on if I had known in advance (or taken AS from LIH through SEA, which I will probably do from now on to avoid the hassle and expense of dealing with bags on HA). |

Thank you! That is wonderful news! That policy was going to be a major source of aggravation.

HA is causing quite the heartache- especially since they provide soo much feeding traffic to other carriers. We really just need our N/S ANC-LIH
HA really complicates the use of the AS companion certificate to a neighbor island. Fortunately, on our recent trip, my daughter's ticket included both the HA and AS segments, so she was able to check all the luggage for the family. |

How often do you actually have tickets purchased on separate PNRs?

At least with AS I am confident I will get my checked bag in a quick/reasonable amount of time. With DL, who knows how long it might take to get the bags. Factor in 30-45 minutes to get the bag, 10 to recheck it, and another 10 to clear security, that's an hour of wasted time. Typically, I like to book short connections, but wouldn't be comfortable with anything less than 2 hours if I had to recheck. Even then I probably won't have time to get food or stop in the lounge.

I am thinking the the whole "separate ticket" thing is key. If you go to each individual airline and buy different tickets from them then these rules apply but if you have multiple airlines listed on one AS itinerary but possibly different PNR's then you should be ok since AS is used as feeder flights into longer international flights. Anything else would be completely deceptive by stating the rules apply to "seperate tickets".
When I buy SFO-LAX at AA.com and LAX-YVR at AlaskaAir.com I have an 001 and an 027 ticket and the new regulations apply if I check a bag. Ugh. LAX sucks already, and having to go pick up a bag and reclear security makes this a non-starter. |
Thanks for the good news Missy!
Until the AS system will allow the use of discount codes on the AS portions of mixed-carrier itineraries where one combines an AS fare and another airline's fare, separate tickets are required if one wants to use a discount code. Having one ticket may also save on taxes. I'm running into this issue now with combining a DL BHM-AUS fare and an AS AUS-SEA fare and trying to use one of the baggage delivery guarantee discount codes. makfan, have you tried calling AS and getting them to ticket the AA-marketed SFO-LAX and the AS-marketed LAX-YVR together. While it might be confusing if you are using both an EXP and MVPG number, the phone agents should be able to ticket it. |
