gate checking bags allowed?

All the Economy fares Ive bought Transpacific on NZ have had an allowance of TWO checked bags. The OP should be just able to check in both if he doesn't want to take it onboard? (Unless the rules are different for flights originating IN the USA???)

Ex-USA in Y is 2 pieces IIRC. Normal TT ‘Seats to Suit’ product is 23kg unless in PE/J or have *G status.

Air NZ economy AKL - LAX gets one bag, unless you are Koru/Gold or business class.

Update: based on the replies in this thread I was expecting not to be able to gate check the bag, but I figured I'd give it a shot anyway. And turns out it works! The gate agent didn't bat an eye.

Maybe it's because they have contract staff at SFO?
