Air NZ to codeshare with Qantas

Sky News just announced NZ and QF are codesharing QF 115 domestic routes across NZ and Oz. The whole VA relationship must really have gone south!!

Be interesting to see the details from articles when they flow through.
Keen to hear the implications for FFP benefits.

This sort of thing doesn't just happen overnight so there must have been a plan to end the ANZ ties with Virgin Australia for some time.

Story developing here as well:

From AUSBT Qantas and Air New Zealand business class passengers and frequent flyers will enjoy reciprocal lounge access, and is also expected to see the ability to earn points and status credits in each airline's respective loyalty program on flights booked under the appropriate codeshare.

The QF thread with the QF news release: QF to codeshare with NZ
<snip>
The codeshare and customer offering will exclude Trans-Tasman flights. Qantas will continue to codeshare on all connecting Jetstar New Zealand services
<snip>
But as a frequent TT traveller I expects prices to rise

NZ changed the wording on their VA page from "may not accrue APD/SP after 27 Oct" to " will not accrue" this morning.

Believe NZ had been talking to both VA and QF about cooperation on domestic network only. Perhaps VA told them not interested. A big mistake!

Makes deciding flight times easier, am glad this for the better. The benefits were highly aligned to VF passengers for far too long.

This is great for me flying TT from WLG and doing lots of business in regional Australia. VA's regional schedules and routes were quite limiting, and will be nice to have access to QF domestic lounges. Hoping for SP on QF domestic, but not holding my breath.

Might be one of those articles but I did read it included reciprocal SP/SC earn which NZ never had with VA. Was only APD. I think the most I ever earned in economy was 4 APD so I'm expecting SP earn to be abysmal. So I wouldn't get your hopes up.

If they're going to go like for like then Elite should get the domestic business lounges. I expect EP1 to get Chairmans Lounge, and NZ Gold and Koru to access the Qantas club for the Qantas club members and their own gold members.

Would this only apply if you booked a connecting domestic flight from a TT or would you also be able to book a domestic flight in NZ (without a connecting QF TT flight) on its own and earn QF credits?

I think the article may be referring to earning Status in QFF for NZ domestic flights. QFF usually allows Status earning on non-oneworld partners booked on QF code.

What is slightly peculiar about this agreement is that the code share will apply to 30 domestic New Zealand destinations yet there are only 20?

My guess it is flights as flights get code shares and not routes. And normally the code shares will only link to/form with the international flights.
