Upgrading for Two
I am flying to London from Toronto on March 13th, the flight in Economy is sold out. There are lots of seats in Business left. I got two Special Certs with my 2009 Elite Areoplan membership.
I used one already on a flight in March, and want to use one again, the thing is my wife is coming too and I only have one cert left. Does anyone know if there is room on the day of the flight if they'd allow her to be upgraded?
Or is there anyway to get another Special Cert?
Thanks.

Only way to get another SSWU is to fly the required miles in order to pass the Tier threshold where you earn another pair of SSWUs. Only other hope is that the flight is oversold on your day of flight and they op-up you.

One would never know until the day of the flight to see whether the wife can get upgraded, but if it happens, it will be called an "op-up".
"Op-ups" are done according to status. So it would depend on whether the wife has status. Alternatively, consider confirming her with the SSWU and hope for an "op-up" for yourself.

I agree with mudd_stuffin. Use the SSWU for your wife and hope that they are oversold in the back and move you up because of your status. Make sure you ask about that in the lounge so that they're "aware" of you!
As an Elite, you won't get another SSWU until you hit 75,000 miles I believe. Not sure if there are any other ways for Elites to get them - SEs can earn 2 with every pass purchase if they chose that option.

If you are willing to spring for it, you could buy a Latitude ticket for your wife and upgrade her immediately with a SWU and then buy a Leisure ticket for yourself and wait for the upgrade window.
Two reasons to use the Latitude ticket for your wife:
1. Assuming she has no status and you are Elite, you are higher on the upgrade pecking order.
2. Makes her feel important.
