Shitake mushrooms! I believe we have a winner...

Would you be able to post the breakdown of all those surcharges TriumphS3? It should be at the bottom of the electronic itinerary they send you. I'd love to see how the cost got that high.

YYZ-NRT-MUC-YYZ = $568.00 in taxes.

I changed a UA award recently and instead of flying out of the US, they added $285 more for flying out of Canada.
Yes, flying out of Canada is much more expensive than the US on award tickets.

Is that economy or business? All Air Canada?

Burning through the Aeropesos :D

YYZ-YUL (AC J)
YUL-ZRH (LX F)
ZRH-BRU (LX J)
OPEN JAW
DUS-YYZ (LH F)

100,000 points

CA 25.91
RC 3.25
XT 153.20

Two interesting things here.

1 - The aeroplan.com booking did not want to accept this routing but the call centre agent had no problem putting it through.

2- I booked a very similar ticket the other day. YYZ-DUS-CDG-Open Jaw-ZRH-YUL-YYZ. The only difference is that on this ticket there is a ZRH-BRU segment in J on LX whereas on the ticket booked two days ago there is a segment DUS-CDG in J on LH. XT on this ticket, however, is $50.00 higher.

All is good though. Avoided AC fuel surcharges as much as possible, avoided the USA and the SSSS that I would inevitably get, and also get to tag along with my wife to a conference she needs to attend :)

Yes I know, TERRIBLE redemption.
But it was either take the first class flight or do a milk run stopping in Denver or San Francisco overnight both ways. Business class @ 40,000 was not offered. I strongly dislike Aeroplan will be leaving it soon.

It gets alot better when you call up Aeroplan for a 20K refund. They have a system error that prevents you from redeeming a 40K NAmerica trip when there are only 2 classes of service (which USAir has). For some reason, it charges you the extra 20 and you have to call in to request a refund.

Enjoy your  first class experience on USAir. Maybe they'll let you save the plastic drink cups as a souvenir!

My dad was booking a summer ticket to Europe on Aeroplan.com

Given how sneaky the booking engine is in pushing AC first, he chose YYZ-CDG, and FRA-YYZ on AC in addition to his European connections on LO/LH.

He called me asking if $488 is the right taxes....

I laughed, and said, let me handle it, booked him on LH for 80k + $123 in taxes....

I wonder how many hundreds of suckers get scammed everyday booking TATL AC flights....

In other news, I was surprised how excellent summer availability to Europe was!

YVR - LHR June 2011. 100k points plus $506 for a Y seat.

For a variety of reasons LH was not a viable option and the base 60k allocation had gone for the non stop.

To put the best spin on this I see the real value of the 100k points as being $1,400 (base fare before the $506 add onds)

That is your introduction into how AC makes its money off AP customers.

Welcome to FT!

In the future, if you don't mind some extra connections, you can avoid this charge by not flying on AC operated flights.
