:D so I guess, the surcharges will go away now?

but I agree with you, this is why low-value rewards did not increase, such as domestic 25k, or coach rewards.
Its the FT-type moochers that used 120k points to fly around the world in first that are to blame :D

When I purchased these tickets, there was no "Carrier Administration Service Charge" - the Fuel Surcharge notation was changed retroactively on my Aeroplan account. Note that if I was to purchase today, the CASC would be $340(Y)/$480(J).

ylwae Apr 17, 2011 12:59 pm

YLW-YVR vv $129.xx (Y)

YLW-LAS vv $151.xx (3 J segments, 2 Y)

More flying and J cabins with the second itin, but the big difference is no "carrier administration service charge" because there's one UA segment involved (I guess). That was about $55 for the 1st itin.

Three things:
The flight from the island airport did not attract the $54 fuel surcharge, along with saving $5 on AIP compared to YYZ :D
I was not charged any Poland taxes - which is weird, since its a stopover.
The German tax also looks small considering two Germany connections..

I'm willing to bet your itinerary was 'auto quoted' by the booking system and not the agent. The 'auto quote' system makes mistakes like forgetting the YQ (fuel surcharge). IME the auto quoting system is currently no more accurate than letting the agent do it manually,

Thanks! But I doubt it will be in place by next Feb :( Also I would assume the evening flights (which appear to be a bit more in demand mist get them first.

Nicely done! How's the timing getting home from LAX? I was going to do a similar return but the LAX arrival time made for crappy connections from there to YYC.

bluto May 5, 2011 7:04 pm

Is there any way to calc the fees and taxes independently?

I booked this round-trip yesterday, all in business class on Lufthansa:

MCO-FRA stopover
FRA-OSL turnaround
OSL-FRA (overnight connection)
FRA-ATL departure open jaw

80k miles
$226.20 tax

Is there any way to calculate the tax on these award fares independently? When the agent said he to wait for him to calculate the taxes, I could sense he was doing it manually and it did not inspire a lot of confidence it was accurate. For all I know, he added it up incorrectly and I said "Uhh . . . ok" anyway. I'd love to have a way to make sure the figures are basically right so next time I can respond more intelligently.

I searched for my itinerary in this thread but didn't see anything similar so I can't compare that way. I'm looking for a more general method in any case. Thanks.

DaveTO May 5, 2011 7:06 pm

Looks reasonable. Between US and German airport and environment taxes it's in the right ballpark.

http://matrix.itasoftware.com/
Use multicity if necessary to force your exact flights

At the end click on View itinerary and fare details

Subtract any YQ/YR components for pure taxes.

Pretty horrifying

I'm seeing a lot of itineraries, that look longer than mine, and in the same direction. I booked from

YVR-YYV-FRA-TRN

Then,

TRN-FRA-YUL-YVR

And the taxes, security charges etc. all in were 445.70 each!

The itinerary is choppy as I have no status anymore and booked "late" in February.

Check your tax breakdown carefully.

Yes there are taxes and security charges - probably between $150 and $200 - you can t get away from those.
The rest is a carrier administration charge - money that does not go to any government agency - it stays with Air Canada/Aeroplan.

It is lumped with taxes to trick people into believe that AC/AE do not keep the money. It is only payable when one flies Air Canada on an Aeroplan ticket. If you fly a partner, those charges are not charged.

mapleg May 6, 2011 3:47 pm

Eek--it would have been cheaper to avoid AC, eg
YVR-FRA-TRN all on Lufthansa

(not sure what cabin you are in) Might even be worth to pay the change fee to avoid most of those fuel surcharges.

My trip YYZ-Europe-Asia-Toronto came in at about $175 plus $30 fee

Just booked the following trip for 2 Adults + 1 Child in Economy Class:

YYZ -> FRA -> CDG (Stop)

LHR is one of the city we are visiting.. so I can't avoid that.. :( But I did avoid the AC direct flight... otherwise, I might need to pay over $1000 per PAX just on tax.
