Routes that do not have fuel surcharges (YQ) when operated by carriers that normally charge YQ:
1. USA-Germany-Other country. If only the Germany-other country segment is on LH it does not have YQ. E.g. DFW-FRA-BLR with TATL on UA and FRA-BLR on LH.
2. USA-Canada-Other country. The USA-Canada segment on AC does not have YQ if the Canada-Other country segment is operated by a carrier that does not charge YQ. E.g. DFW-YYZ-ADD.

Interestingly enough it was about $100 cheaper than the last one of these Europe-NA via Asia one-ways I did (TXL-FRA-ICN-JFK-YYZ). Even more interesting was that flying CA (a non-YQ airline) the YQ charge priced out the same.

Bringing 2 relatives to LHR-YYC July 2015 (for the Stampede) in J reward miles (180,000). Surcharge for the 2 is listed @ $2,164. Have not used miles on AC since 2004, so nothing to compare. Is this the new going rate? Woow!

Read few posts in this forum and other for ways to reduce the scam charges. you must be looking at AC only for that to be listed. But from LHR, you might be out of luck with other carriers that charge less unless your relative want to take scenic route via Europe and eastern Canada.
Look at LHR-ZRH-YUL-YYC.
