Just walked past it 15 minutes ago and there was someone who was dressed a lot like Mr Fixit Holmes (in his famous overalls) fixing it again tonight. I hope GTAA is only paying on a minutes operated basis...

I observed the walkway in motion, albeit only for a few seconds, when i arrived from Chicago last week. I asked the tech "how much longer before it's operational"
"hopefully soon" was his response

I don't think you can compare Beijing's new airport with any airport in a western democracy...they were able to displace a village of 10,000 to build their new terminal...like comparing cherries and cocconuts.
(And we don't even know yet if China "got it right the first time")

The sidewalk was covered in plastic when I was there a few days ago... you know, the plastic you see covering a crime scene in those t.v. police shows.

walked by it last night.
There was a "Preventative Maintenance" sign blocking access.
There is some irony for you

Went by it this morning and a cleaning worker was pretending to be dusting off the handrails. I asked him when it would open and he confirmed that tomorrow is the day. It is still covered in plastic at the ends.
We'll see.

I had a nice long chat with the fix-it guy when we were heading off to CZM for March break. He was painstakingly applying an acoustic paint to each of the sections of the walkway for noise control. Very interesting guy. He claimed that the walkway had been installed before it had been fully developed during the initial construction of the terminal, because it would have been impossible to do it after the fact. The main section's just too big. They've been getting it functional as well as having it certified by various standards agencies from around the world. Apparantly there's a lot of interest from other airports and train stations. These certifications have resulted in lots of changes and it all has to be done manually on-site. Because it's in a secure area tools have to be logged in and out and he can't even walk away from it to go to the washroom without locking everything up. I probably set the schedule back a day with all my questions, but I thought he said the 20-somethingth was the projected startup date.
I'm looking forward to seeing it working.
