The Good Scissors
I'm not sure if she is still here, but I saw a woman doing some handiwork in the YYZ T1 MLL, including knitting needles and a pair of very nice looking scissors.
The best explanation I can think of, based on the rules of my own household as a child, is that she had brought with her The Good Scissors. The Good Scissors would never be used to violate any laws. Only the regular scissors would be used for that.
By the way, everyone in the lounge is impeccably dressed today, so obviously the MLL dress code thread had its desired effect

Americans now permit scissors of some types, but these must have been missed as I don't believe Canadian security regs have changed in this regard.

I was thinking the same thing about cigarette lighters on saturday.
A couple of months ago, I flew on UA from TPE-NRT, and my lighter was allowed
through security - I thought there may have been a change in USA policies.
So I brought one with me Saturday heading on a flight to ORD. It was taken
away at the security check. Fine, I was expecting it.
But when I went into the smoking room after security, there were at least 10
lighters on the tables, and one CATSA security guard smoking in there as well!
I guess those were all " good lighters", and mine was the dangerous kind!

But...not the dangerous kind you and I were carrying.

When I went through security at TPA this morning... they still had up all of the signage indicating no lighters. And I know as recently as last week, they were still confiscating them at the US airports I visited.
Maybe your right and it's the "good" kind that they let through

I made it through security twice at YOW with a _metal_ butane lighter. Apparently you are allowed one by CATSA, carried on you. Of course, recently in SFO I noticed a big bin at security for lighters.

last week, the YYZ CATSA folks spent 5 minutes tearing through my bag looking for the pocket flashlight that I had in there but ignored the pair of scissors in the same pocket. She had to ask her supervisor whether the flashlight was allowed. Go figure.
