Actually it kinda makes me feel like I'm talking to a judge or a Revenue Canada auditor. On AC I have been acknowledged by my last name at check-in, MLL reception and when handing my boarding pass to the gate agent upon boarding. And after seated when drink orders are taken, if not earlier by the IC on international flights. Of course on board, that's always in Exec class. |
Oh jeepers, do they know our name?
Oh my gosh. I got off a plane the other day, and there was this blue-coat Concierge -- BLUE! My shock -- o'm'god -- BLUE! -- (that's like Platinum Black. Concierge Plus, sor of). It's what she said. "Welcome, InTheAirGuy, to Terminal 1. And thank you for post 669" O'm'God! InTheAirGuy! How did she know my name? Why was she there? CIA? Karl Rove? She did'nt' say my name. She said INTHEAIRGUY. I was in shock. I still am. |
In February, I was on a YOW-YYZ flight in J with my 20 year-old daughter. The IC addressed us as Mr and Mrs Adorne ...

I find the whole issue of being addressed by name as very contrived and ego stroking for those who need it.
In the case of Nordsfan and others where some of the staff recognise you, it is different, that is good customer service and happens through a more personal relationship with that individual staff member. When I am sitting in my seat, trying to be as obscure as possible, I find it awkward and odd when the FA tries to find my name on the seat map to address me by name. All they need to do is take my food and drink order and leave me alone. If my flight was good I will tell them at the end, same it if was poor. |

I have now read through the previous posts in this thread and see somewhat of a theme.
My comments are mean't only as respectful to the people I post about in this post. Those FT'ers who I know/think to be of an older generation than myself are the ones who I think seem more keen on the being addressed by name. I take is a generational thing. In years gone by First Class travel was for the monied and first class folk, not the rabble. The people in First Class, used to dress and behave first class, they were raised to address their elders and others by Mr and Mrs, Dr, Capt etc. Times have changed, not necessarily for the good. Casual appears to be rule in todays society. Apparently my three year old is one of the few who is made to use Mr and Mrs. Then their are the oddballs like myself, who were raised the old fashioned way, but are heavily influenced by today. |

The way people refer to each other seems to be changing. Most of my professors at UNI get us to address them by their first name. I found it very strange the first day I got here, however I have come to like it, as it makes one feel more comfortable talking to them, and I am sure most universities across the country do not have this policy, but the decreased power distance certainly makes one feel more comfortable in the environment. Even at work in the summer, all of the junior staff referred to the partners on a first name basis, and it made the atmosphere that much better. In fact all of my friends call my parents by their first name, and my parents prefer that, ever since my dad started coaching my soccer team everyone has refered to him by his first name.

This practice (at least in my case) seems to have disappeared lately and I wonder why. I haven't changing my dress code nor my own smile at the GA and wonder if this is just one more courtesty to SE's that is biting the dust. The airports I use most are YVR, YYZ, YUL, LAX, SEA, BWI and MCO. DF |
About 50% of time I am told to enjoy the flight Mr Mak by the check-in agent. Always Exec agent.
50 % mr Mak by the GA scanning boarding pass. Never by MLL staff 90% when boarding and they are reading boarding pass. 25% by J FA when reading manifest and taking food order, however I have found if the IC does this for one pass, they do it for all, so not based on status. Never in the back of the bus. |

I agree with the poster who said when they know you that is just friendly, but other than that when they have tried to use my name in J I have always said call me by my first name. I too could care less if they now my name but understand where the other posters are coming from about service. To me it's not a big deal but I do like the UA and AA announcements ^
One time on a YVR-HNL a concierge told the IC that I was a very nice SE (blah blah blah) and to make sure he looked after me. Well didn't all H*ll break loose and I couldn't even watch the movies as he was checking on me every 15 minutes no matter what I said!!!! Fast forward to flying FRA-YYC about 2 years later and I see the IC at the front of the J cabin and tell Mrs Cattle "Watch This". Man this guy made such a spectical of welcoming me back and he even remembered my first name. It was unreal :D I just wanted to shrivel up in a corner and Mrs Cattle was killing herself. Mrs Cattle thinks he was sweet on me but I reserve judgement :o He was actually was probably the most attentive IC I have ever seen serving the J cabins on any flight I have been on. He worked his butt off to make sure that everyone was looked after and that is what I think makes an employee stand out, not the name thing. |
Quite Often....always get mistaken for a CBC Radio/TV personality who shares the same last name! :D
|
At the gate when collecting the ticket, never. On the plane in J from the IC with a welcome, it use to be often. Now I seldom get a welcome from the IC walking around the cabin to the SE's.
On the Asian carries I get it all the time from the IC who comes around to welcome me and from the crew as they serve me. It even happens the odd time I've flown within Asia in economy. Within J or F, it should be expected. In the back it is just a great way to show concern for your customer. ^ |
