Star Alliance to implement common IT platform

LH and UA are leads.

Will AC follow soon?

It's my understanding that AC is currently preparing to do just that.

I am IT challenged.

Perhaps some of our more knowledgeable posters could comment on this initative.

Is this a good move?

If you're a believer in the Second System Effect, first described in The Mythical Man-Month, then it's probably a bad idea.

There is also this for those of you who are doubters.

Sorry but am I entering a time warp or something? Wasn't this announced two years ago? STAR was working on a common IT/Res platform, and part of the progress was AE's being able to access award space on other STAR carriers. Ultimately there was going to be more integration . So what's different about this announcement?

I think you're referring to StarNet which allows the different res systems to talk to each other, but each airline still as their own system.

This announcement is for *A carriers to implement a common platform across partners.

The concept is good, but if LH hits the timelines they are suggesting, I'll eat my keyboard. Enterprise systems are incredibly complex and the integration points are all points of failure. The platform itself may be excellent, but unless it does everything.....and nobody does..... it will take at least twice as long to get things started and even longer to get things finished. We are not talking about 2 airplane start-ups here!!

I would expect paper tickets will start coming back in vogue on LH and UA....
