Upfare using AP points

Upfare using AP points
I know about bid upgrades using points and SAUA but this post on Reddit suggests you can use your points to upfare. Has anyone done this, do they redeem at $0.01?

Well, the first post in that thread uses the word "points", however lower down the same poster says "pay the difference between economy and PE".
I've never heard of paying a fare difference in points, only bidding on an upgrade.
