Room service was $6. The stuff I was drinking was $3 Coke Zero.

If we don't have fluent English and I can't see the cans, I am very hesitant to ask for Zero.

But didn't the Bovine say there are some in the room service order?

We've spent lots of time together, and I don't think I would have ever described your English language skills as less than fluent...

That room service order had fries and beer. We didn't finish the $3 cans.

The issue isn't my English. It's the broken english over the phone where they don't know what "zero" is or don't have it and substitute regular Coke.

The mini bar only had regular and diet, so the safe assumption is room service has the same.

I know, that was a joke

Don't they speak English in the Bahamas though?

Meh. I find room service often has a wider variety than the minibar, but admit that it's variable.

It's just not worth the risk.

In Croatia I asked for an ice bucket for my bottle of champagne. They sent up a bottle of champagne.

Easier to keep things simple.

You can't possibly be that FOTSG, there's ten apps for this.

"a bucket of ice, please. Kantu leda, molim."

When someone answers the phone with "guest services, how may I help you?" I tend to reply in English.

And then you didn't get what you wanted.

I'm just saying, spend ten seconds looking something up on Google Translate, ten more learning to pronounce it, and you get a 90% chance of getting the outcome you want.

Plus, I've yet to find a country other than France where you don't win at least a few brownie points for attempting the local language.

In Canada/US, I'd say when I order Coke Zero somewhere that doesn't have it, they inform me of that 40% of the time, they just bring me regular Coke 30% of the time, and the bring me diet 30% of the time.

Throw in language and accent issues, and things get worse.

Language isn't the main problem. It just exacerbates it.

But the official language of the Bahamas is English...

I've always felt that to be not very true about the French.

I order "coke light" anywhere on Earth except Canada and the US, but that's equally true in countries that only speak English. I don't remember the last time someone brought me a regular Coke.

But when they speak English, why not ask "do you have Coke Zero?"
