Noncompliant AC DH-8s banned from US Airspace EFF Jan1 2020

per @GuruJanitor commented on this OMAAT thread stating that Air Canada has Dash-8 planes that are banned from any US airspace as of this past Wednesday 1/1/20.

Apparently missed a 10 year deadline to have ADS-B compliant hardware installed on each plane.

Anyone confirm or have details/FIN #s ?

I would be interested in seeing this also! Saw a DH4 flying YFC-YUL the other day that had to fly this strange route around Maine because of the new rules.

Is it only Dash-8s that lack the new ADS-B software?

ADS-B is hardware, not software

on a side note, this reminded me I need to get one of the newer ADS-B radio/receivers for my car.

To allows protection against 'speed enforcement by aircraft' which is a regular occurrence on I-80 in PA and in the Western US.

Yup. Deadline was there, they had years to prepare. I'd love to hear why they didn't.

From the above Jan1 image, I see 9 Canadian registration planes flying without ADS-B. I didn't take the time to cross reference against AC fleet list to see if AC is the only noncompliant operator in Canada. (Plus a single point in time won't show any of the aircraft that weren't in the air at the exact moment).

Did the only Skytrax 4* carrier in North America not feel the need to invest in this safety mandate?

I'm *sure* no customers notice a 35min longer flight time--nobody flies on a connecting flight in the winter. As we all know the DH8 is a speed demon compared to a jet

Perhaps they can dedicate these aircraft to the parries and north. That keeps them away from any airport near US air space.

ISTR someone mentioning some A/C type of the Jazz fleet being set out west. Even based out of YVR they would have no reason to head below the 49th.

That they are still serving F'town would seem to contradict this.

They're DH1's, to be imminently retired from the AC/QK fleet. Pointless for AC to invest in them. The places they'll be restricted from are practically non-existent and the slight bit of extra flight time to avoid controlled US airspace is much cheaper than literally millions in new avionics.

Sorry, I didn't realize we were being that technical lol

So it is hardware, but it still has to have some software to work I am sure, so I am like 50% right
