But if goes for several months, it could be very costly.
AC also has a good excuse to cancel and/or consolidate flights without paying compensation because it’s something beyond the carrier’s control.
Though I’m unsure how EU261 will handle delays for those fortunate to be covered by it. If a month goes by, can a consumer play the “it’s the carrier’s obligation to have enough aircraft in its fleet if some are grounded” card? And what if you were never booked on a MAX, but AC borrowed that aircraft to consolidate some other route and you arrive home 5 hours later?
Secondly, taking 5-10% of capacity out without the same hit to demand can drive up prices.

It's 2 days away. Plus there is high demand.
YYZ-HKG is $8,000 departing March 17
YYZ ot YVR is not even available in Business Lowest on any flight on March 17. Outbound alone is approx $2,500 depending on the specific flight.
If people need to get where they need to go and will pay the last minute fares AC is showing, well, good for AC.
There are always options.

Assuming they can keep the old 320s generated for the planned sorties and the Embraers in the fleet, instead of their planned retirements/sale, its not as severe as losing 36 aircraft. The hard limit on the 320s is probably when they require their heavy maintenance checks as AC probably can obtain waivers for the other airworthiness items on an interim basis.
