Air Canada pilot orders 23 pizzas for pax

With all the AC complaints about OTP, customer service quality and such. Thought I'd share a somewhat happier news article on AC.

Air Canada pilot orders 23 pizzas to Halifax-bound plane stranded on tarmac
Passengers on a delayed Air Canada flight are praising their captain to the skies after he went out of his way to keep them informed — and even ordered pizza directly to their plane stuck on the tarmac.

Nicely done, kudos to the pilot for such a thoughtful gesture.

Obviously the pizza was a great gesture, but won't be realistically replicated across the organization when things go sideways. The concept of keeping passengers informed was repeated several times throughout the article, in addition to the quote in the original post:

Hughes estimates people were in the plane for roughly eight hours after boarding in Toronto. She credits the pilot for keeping them informed as well as fed. The plane had a capacity of more than 150 passengers, but it was not a flight that included any meal.

"It was something that could have been very stressful; he made it a lot easier," she said.

...

"He walked entirely down the length of the plane just to make sure we knew what was going on and whatnot, before departing to Halifax. So I think the mood was set, in reality, by the great work of the captain," Karsten said.
If this key takeaway would be used by gate agents, and other AC employees when there is a delay, etc., IMHO AC would be viewed a lot less negatively by the travelling public.

Missed the memo, won't be reimbursed.

Hope it was Papa Johns so he at least got rewards points!

Info on the pizzas:

"However, passengers weren't hungry for long and the pilot made a phone call directly from the cockpit to a local pizza joint called Minglers Restaurant and Pub.

There were only three staff members working in the kitchen when they received the phone call, but they were quickly able to make 23 large cheese and pepperoni pizzas before taking them to the airport.

Roughly 150 passengers greatly welcomed the pizza as flight attendants handed slices down the aisles. "

Isn't Fredericton where a Westjet pilot ordered pizzas for stranded AC passengers a while back? I'm guessing that this AC pilot didn't want a repeat of that PR fiasco.

How would you have handled the situation if you were the flight crew faced with the same dilemma?

I’m sure that CATSA frisked all the pizzas, and probably groped the more attractive slices.

If it were me, I would have locked the cockpit door and have run through the entire Beastie Boys back catalog.

But that's why they don't let me deal with the unsuspecting public.

Seriously though, the pilots did a good thing by keeping people informed. And an even better thing by trying to keep people comfortable.

Hats off to them I say.
