Haircuts....first the staff, now the creditors

Air Canada is seeking to chop in half the $1.4 billion it spends on aircraft leases each year, the insolvent airline said today in an update on its efforts to restructure.

That's why being a barber in the financial sector is such a good business. If people were silly enough to lend to AC in the last few years they deserve the visit from the barber.

From the monitor's report:

"Air Canada has returned nine aircraft to its lessors, which will save it $43-million on an annual basis. It is currently in talks with its lessors in order to reduce lease payments by more than half, or $720-million a year, and plans to return 31 planes in the next 30 to 45 days."

Anyone know what aircraft type are being returned to the lessors?

Given that some flights are starting to get really hammered, I'm surprised at this quote:

"It also plans to return 31 planes in the next 30 to 45 days."
